Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineSept.self storage 05--KENNEBUNK -- Like every high school football coach, Joe Rafferty brings his players together at the start of preseason practice and talks about goals for the upcoming season. He has been coaching Kennebunk High for 35 years so he has the speech down pat. The only problem, he said, was whether his players believed him."To be quite honest with you," he said, "I could stand in front of my team for the last 10 years and we could say, mention the word 'gold' (as in Gold Ball championship), and I think that they had a tough time believing that was, in fact, a reality."For the last 10 years, Kennebunk played in Class A. Its record in that time was 30-53, including one winning season and three playoff appearances. When the Rams went 5-4 last fall, it was their first winning season since 2001, two years before they moved up to Class A from B.After the Maine Principals' Association reclassified football into four classes based on enrollment last spring, Kennebunk became one of several schools that moved down. The Rams will play in Western Class B with Gorham and Mt. Ararat of Topsham -- two former Class A schools.Playing in Class B, among schools with similar enrollments, already has provided a lift."These guys, they've stepped forward the very first day and said they're interested in winning a Gold Ball," said Rafferty. "I haven't heard them talk like that in the last 10 years."Rafferty and his players know playing in Class B won't be an instant cure-all for the program, that the games won't be easier simply because the schools are smaller. But playing in Class B has been a boon for schools that recently moved down.Westbrook, for instance, has qualified for the playoffs two years in a row in Class B after years of floundering in Class A. Marshwood advanced to the Class B state championship game last fall in its second Class B season."That was a huge boost to both those programs," said Rafferty.Jeff Guerette, the Westbrook coach, said playing in Class B has infused the program with hope."It's kind of given the kids more confidence when they're playing schools with similar- sized enrollments," he said. "We feel we have a chance to be competitive week in, week out. And that's exciting for the kids."And then when we won a few games, that generated some excitement in the community and in school, which was really big for us."Guerette said while the Blazes were competitive with some Class A schools, they were simply overmatched by others. "In Class B, there are still some teams that are better than us but there's not that huge gap like there was in Cla迷你倉s A," he said.Frank True, the third-year coach at Mt. Ararat, hopes for similar results. The Eagles haven't had a winning season (6-3) since 2002 -- their last year in Class B before moving up to Class A. Their record the last 10 years has been 16-67 with one playoff appearance and three head coaches.True said if the MPA hadn't reclassified football, the Eagles (0-26 the last three seasons) would have petitioned down anyway."We're hoping to be competitive," he said. "We'd like to win a few games as well, but we're just looking for competitive games. Four quarters of good football would be good for everybody."Kennebunk has played in A, B and C over the years. This is the first time the Rams have dropped down."The biggest thing," said Rafferty, "is that it gives the kids, as well as the coaches, a little more confidence in what they're doing."Depth is a huge key, he said. When Kennebunk would suffer an injury while in Class A, the difference between the Rams' second-team player and one from the larger schools, like Bonny Eagle or Thornton Academy, was sometimes staggering."Here everybody is in the same boat," he said. The new schedule reunites Kennebunk with York, Fryeburg Academy and Marshwood -- three former foes in the long-ago Southern York League. But the rest of the schedule is against mostly new opponents, like Oceanside, Greely and Falmouth.Rafferty is making sure his players realize that nothing will come easily."I've also felt there were some B schools that could play with anybody," he said.Senior running back Nicco DeLorenzo doesn't want anyone to get caught up in the stigma of letters."Class B I don't think it means we're any less of a football team," he said.Ben Bath, a senior two-way lineman, said, "To us it's all about going out and competing, it doesn't matter who we're playing."Any success the Rams have will be built on the momentum of last year's 5-3 mark. "We've got almost everyone back," said senior running back Tyler Elkington. "The excitement is something I haven't seen since I've been here."The excitement, the enthusiasm, the work ethic I've seen here in camp is off the charts."DeLorenzo is ready to prove last year wasn't a fluke."I think my team is full of winners," he said. "We've been playing together for, like, forever. We're ready to go. We've been waiting for this for a long, long time."Mike Lowe can be contacted at 791-6422 or at:mlowe@pressherald.comTwitter: MikeLowePPHCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services文件倉

mini storage

mini storage

Source: Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, IowaAug. 30--WATERLOO, Iowa -- City leaders may tighten the leash on pit bull owners.Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark said animal control staff members are working on a "very restrictive ordinance for pit bulls" in the wake of a brutal attack earlier this week that left two people injured."It's something we need to react to," he said.City Council members are scheduled to discuss the possible ordinance changes during a short work session at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Public comment typically is not taken during work sessions, but any ordinance change would need to come back at a regular council meeting for approval.Councilwoman Carolyn Cole said council members are already receiving emails urging the city not to target the breed despite Tuesday's high-profile dog attack on Riehl Street.Vivien Brookman, 65, was at Allen Hospital on Thursday recovering from about 200 dog bites, while 13-year-old William McNealy suffered bites and scratches after both were attacked by three dogs while walking on a public street.Police shot and killed a large pit bull involved in the incident while an 8-month-old male Boston terrier mix and a 1-year-old female pit bumini storagel were detained by Waterloo Animal Control. While some communities have adopted outright bans on pit bulls, Clark said the ordinance being developed by Sandie Greco, who oversees animal control for the city, and Maria Tiller, an animal control officer, would still allow people to own the breed under more restrictive circumstances.Among ideas being considered, the ordinance would require all pit bulls to be microchipped for identification and would create a separate dog license for the breed. He said the rules could require all pit bulls to be spayed or neutered and could place limits on the number of pit bulls a person can own.Current city zoning ordinances limit the number of adult dogs at a household to four. But there is nothing limiting specific breeds.Meanwhile, Clark is expecting to present certificates of heroism at Tuesday's council meeting to three individuals who came to help those being attacked by the dogs this week: William McNealy, KaRon Bennett and Tanner Lee Cornwell.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) Visit Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) at .wcfcourier.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage

Source: San Antonio Express-NewsAug. 31--Given the roaming dog crisis in San Antonio, there are many who would argue the city needs more-kill, not no-kill.With a marked surge in reported bites of Bexar County residents, it's understandable to question the city's no-kill goals. Why keep more dogs alive in S.A., when so many are prowling our streets? But a closer look at the numbers, and facts, makes it difficult to connect the city's no-kill efforts to the roaming dog population, or dog bites."I look after the dog bite issue here at the American Veterinary Medical Association, and I would not assume there is any connection," said Emily Patterson-Kane, a social welfare scientist.Yes, reported bites of Bexar County residents have surged as euthanizations have fallen off. But there's no clear correlation. While reported bites steadily increased from about 2,800 to nearly 3,400 between fiscal 2010 and 2012, euthanizations of animals were erratic. There were 18,460 euthanizations in fiscal 2010. In 2011, that number shot up to 19,646. In 2012, there were 13,560.This fiscal year, there have been 5,735 euthanizations through July. The fiscal year ends Sept. 30.Even with no-kill, ACS is still putting down thousands of dogs. These dogs are so physically mangled euthanasia beco新蒲崗迷你倉es humane, or they are aggressive dogs that can't be controlled. So, no-kill already selects dogs predisposed to biting. The remaining dogs are spayed/neutered and vaccinated before being adopted or placed in shelters. Even if these dogs end up running loose, at least they are not adding to the roaming dog problem with litters. Is the city's no-kill effort clogging kennel space, forcing dogs onto the streets? It's true. Animal Care Service officers often can't pick up roaming dogs because kennels are full. But Kathy Davis, director of Animal Care Services, said it takes about the same time to place a dog with a family or shelter as it does to put it down.Meanwhile, there has been a decrease in the number of animals scraped off the road, about 34,000 a year. That number has dropped by about 6 percent since fiscal 2011, said Animal Care Services spokeswoman Lisa Norwood.San Antonio has a roaming dog problem. It also has a dog bite problem. We await a city plan to rapidly address this pressing quality-of-life issue. But more-kill instead of no-kill is not the solution. San Antonio can become a no-kill and no-bite city.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the San Antonio Express-News Visit the San Antonio Express-News at .mysanantonio.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

pub_date:A window of opportunity has opened, and I will be taking that leap after a 22-year journey at The Business TimesTHIS is my last Show Me the Money column, more than 11 years since I proposed the idea to my bosses. I'm grateful to my bosses for giving me that opportunity to start that part of my life journey as a columnist for The Business Times. Close to 500 articles later, it is time to start another chapter of my life journey - that of a fund manager, implementing the investment process that research of more than a decade has shown to have worked. In life, we never really know where we will end up. Just like when I start writing an article, I sometimes don't really know where it will lead me to. I've entertained thoughts of retiring at this job - my first and only so far! After all, I am still passionate about writing articles to educate investors, to share the findings of my research as well as interesting ideas I've come across. It still gives me a high when I receive emails from readers. And I continue to look forward to meeting up with those who have contacted me, to learn about their life experiences, their philosophies in life.Sailing awayBut some time this year, a friend whom I've known for at least eight years came to me with a proposition to join his newly set up firm. "We can build the company we want brick by brick."A few years back, when I was going through my mid-life crisis, I lamented in this column that I've never taken a risk in my life before. Perhaps this is the time to take that leap!Nassim Taleb in his book Fooled by Randomness says: "Most successes are caused by very few 'windows of opportunity', failing to grab one can be deadly for one's career. Take your luck!"I'm not sure if this is an "opportunity" and whether it will lead to "success".But I'm taking that leap anyway because I believe in what Mark Twain, the American writer, said: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do, than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."In any case, I'm not someone who has a grand purpose in life and who would endure frostbites just to get to the summit. I'm more the the type who enjoys the journey with less emphasis on the end goal. So I'll just see where this path leads me.Reflections of the past 22 yearsMy life events attest to the role randomness plays. Years back, after finishing my Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) or the equivalent of A-levels here, I was pondering over where my next stop would be. One day, I was flipping through the Star newspaper in Penang, and I saw an advertisement from the then Straits Times Press Holdings inviting students to apply for its scholarship.I sent in my application and was asked to come down for an interview. They put me up in a room at Automobile Association on River Valley Road. Times House was just further up the road. The Human Resource manager who interviewed me was kind enough to short-list me, even though I wasn't the most fluent English-speaking person around. Even up till today!?It still gives me a high when I receive emails from readers. And I continue to look forward to meeting up with those who have contacted me, to learn about their life experiences, their philosophies in life. Then on the first day when I was supposed to report to work, I showed up at the Business Times newsroom where I had interned during my two previous vacations. The news editor in BT at that time was surprised to see me. "Oh, we didn't know that you are joining us." So I called the HR department. And the person at the other end迷你倉價錢said: "Oh, it doesn't mean that just because you've interned there in the two previous years, you will automatically join BT. But since you are there, ok la. You just join BT."That was the beginning of my 22-year career at the leading business daily of Singapore! The initial years were tough. English was my third language in school. A copy editor's comment about me in those early years was: "Hooi Ling is not articulate in her writing. Just as she is not articulate as a person."That was a big blow to my already low self-esteem. But I plodded on. I found things to amuse myself along the way. Every time I was moved to a new beat, I dived into it, relishing the new learning opportunity.I covered retail and manufacturing sectors initially. Then I was moved to the China beat, because I could understand and read Chinese. I reported on Singapore's investments in China, and was keeping a close tab on the development of the Suzhou Industrial Park. When the China fever died down a little, I was moved to cover telecommunications. As luck would have it, my stint on the telecoms beat coincided with the period when the industry was being liberalised. SingTel was fighting tooth and nail with M1.One day, the SingTel public relations manager called to complain that they'd done a media audit and found my articles to be biased against them. A few weeks later, M1's chief executive Neil Montefiore invited me out for lunch. During lunch, he wanted to understand why my reports favoured SingTel. I guessed I was doing something right. As one of the perks of the job, I got to witness the launch of SingTel's satellite from French Guiana.Along the way, I got myself a Master's degree in Applied Finance and completed my Chartered Financial Analyst exams. That was when I asked to start this column, believing that I had something to share with readers. It was with this column that I sort of came into my own. I received encouraging emails from readers. A book publisher asked me to write a book. I countered by suggesting that we compile my published articles into books instead. We came out with four. I received job offers from the financial sector. Nothing worked out, nothing felt right, until now.A few years back, a group of students from the NUS investment club asked to meet me. During the session, I told them not to choose the highest paying job, but one that they saw a purpose in, one that they were passionate about, one that they were good at, one that didn't compromise their integrity. If I were to speak to them again today, I'd tell them not to go for short-cuts. Put in the hours. Build their foundations right. Substance trumps style, over the long term.I'd also tell them to try to cultivate goodwill with whoever they come into contact with. The feeling of someone genuinely wishing you well in your next venture is heart-warming.Make the little things wellFinally, I'd like to leave readers with a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, on the necessity to put in the hours."Do not talk about giftedness, inborn talents! One can name great men of all kinds who were very little gifted. They acquired greatness, became "geniuses" (as we put it), through qualities lack of which no one who knew what they were would boast of: they all possessed that seriousness of the efficient workman which first learns to construct the parts properly before it ventures to fashion a great whole; they allowed themselves time for it, because they took more pleasures in making the little, secondary things well than in the effect of a dazzling whole."PS: For readers who may like to get in touch with me, I'm sure I can be found somewhere in cyberspace. The writer is a CFA charterholder迷你倉

Source: Jordan Times, AmmanAug. 30--AMMAN -- Amidst growing fears of a US-led military strike against Syria, Jordanians expressed deep concerns about a spillover from the neighbouring crisis-hit Arab state. In interviews with The Jordan Times over the phone on Wednesday and Thursday, residents of the northern region near the border with Syria said they fear that military action against Syria might trigger an all-out regional war, where Jordan, especially communities on the border area, might bear the brunt of the raging conflict. The US and its Western allies accuse forces loyal to the embattled President Bashar Assad of unleashing nerve gas against Damascus' East Ghouta and West Ghouta, and are threatening to strike the regime's airbases and chemical arsenal in response.Tahsin Rsheidat, from Turra town near Ramtha, said all the people in his village, which is twinned with the southern Syrian village of Tal Shihab, "are holding their breath after the countdown to a war on Syria began"."The only thing people do now is watch TV for the latest news on the prospective war," he said.Although people of Turra are no strangers to the unrest in Syria a few kilometres away, Rsheidat said the current situation is different."It is no longer an internal struggle in Syria. It is getting closer to a large-scale war," he said."The news about the US military strikes against Syria has increased our anxiety about the conflict and its possible, if not inevitable, spillover to Jordan," he said. The same worries were expressed by Ahmad Rsheidat, also from Turra, who added that people in Ramtha, some 90km north of Amman, are in constant fear that the Syrian war could reach their to儲存ns and villages, which have been receiving the largest number of Syrian refugees."We are not worried about the increasing number of refugees as much as the possibility of being drawn into the war in Syria. War is chaos and cannot be contained," he said.A housewife from Turra, who preferred to be referred to as Um Mohammad Darabseh, also expressed concerns about the war expanding to the region."With the possible military strikes, the conflict in Syria could transform from clashes between government forces and opposition fighters into a full-out regional war," the mother of four said.Israa Obeidat, from the northern Kufr Soum village in Irbid Governorate, was also anxious about the possible US-led military strikes against Syria. "Seriously, people in my village, which is very close to the border with Syria, are worried about where to go if the war reaches Jordan's north region," said Obeidat, who is a banker.Expressing worries over a possible Syrian retaliatory chemical attack against Jordan, Obeidat demanded that the government distribute gas masks among residents of the northern regions."We do nothing in our village but watch TV, search the Internet and social networks for news about the military strike," she said.Ahmad Salameh, from Dafianeh village in Mafraq Governorate, some 80km northeast of Amman, was also concerned about the new developments in the Syrian crisis. He said that many villagers left Dafianeh, on the borderline with Syria, fearing that their village might be hit during the war.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at .jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services新蒲崗迷你倉
