Source: Chicago TribuneSept.迷你倉出租 06--The Bears will open their 2013 season Sunday by hosting Cincinnati at Soldier Field. With kickoff nearing, here's this week's "Hurry-Up," a flurry of notable odds and ends on the Bengals.----The Bears' offensive line has not only been overhauled with Roberto Garza as the only returning starter from 2012. But the first test of 2013 comes against one of the NFL's most imposing defensive lines. Defensive tackle Geno Atkins gives the Bengals plenty of push up front. And yet it's massive ends Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap who have a chance to cause just as many headaches for quarterback Jay Cutler. After being sacked 38 times in 2012, Cutler won't only face the challenge of staying upright Sunday, he'll also have to account for the length of the 6-foot-7-inch Johnson and the 6-foot-6 Dunlap with his throws. If he's even a little bit sloppy and the o-line can't fully contain that duo, it could be a Mutombo-esque shot-blocking exhibition for Cincinnati.Said Cutler: "They're really long guys. ... We've got to do different things. I don't want to get into exactly what we have to do or what we're going to do, but we've got to hit them from different angles and you've got to move the passing point, move the pocket from time to time and we've got to get rid of the ball quickly."----In recent years, the Bengals rushing attack has featured plenty of power but not enough flash. The backs to lead the team in rushing since Marvin Lewis became coach in 2003: Rudi Johnson, Kenny Watson, Cedric Benson and BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Green-Ellis enters Sunday as the likely starter. But the Bears will see plenty of rookie Gio Bernard as well, a shifty, change-of-pace back whom Cincinnati believes it stole with the No. 37 pick in April's draft. Last season, the longest reception by a Bengals back was a 16-yarder by Cedric Peerman in Week 6. Last month in the second preseason game, Bernard took a short pass, maneuvered into space and covered 22 yards. Baby steps, maybe. But overall the Bengals feel they have found a playmaker to give their backfield more pop.----After making 64 consecutive starts, left tackle Andrew Whitworth is all but certain to miss Sunday's opener. Whitworth hasn't practiced all week and hasn't really done much of anything since undergoing knee surgery after last season. So now it's Anthony Collins' turn to protect Andy Dalton's blindside. Collins isn't a newbie. Cincinnati drafted him in the fourth round in 2008 and he has 18 career starts under his belt on the line. His Week 1 challenge will be to help contain Bears defensive end Julius Peppers, who even at age 33 and in his 11th season keeps opposing tackles up at night. As Collins told reporters this week: "He's still the best; at 33, 21, he's still Julius Peppers. So, you've got to man up. Point blank. Period."----As a rookie in 2011, Dalton led the Bengals to nine wins and a surprising playoff berth. Last season, he aided 10 victories and another playoff push. 迷你倉ut for a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game since January 1991, Dalton's early progress won't mean enough to fans if he can't figure out a way to help his team to take the next step. Lewis believes Dalton's maturity has put him in position to become a far bigger influence in the locker room."He went from being the quarterback last year to being the leader of the offense," the head coach said. "And this year he's ascended into being the leader of the football team. The baton has been passed to Andy. We go as Andy goes."That, of course, is a somewhat predictable endorsement at this stage. And as much as anything, the Bengals hope Dalton can become more dangerous as a deep passer. That's been a focal point for Cincinnati heading into this season with quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese tutoring Dalton on finding the proper release points and making sure to get the ball out as soon as he plants on the final step of his drop.Dalton has one of the game's best deep playmakers helping his cause. A.J. Green had 1,350 receiving yards in 2012, scored touchdowns in 10 games and had six contests with at least one catch of 40 yards or longer. On top of that, Mohamed Sanu looks to be emerging as a legitimate No. 2 opposite Green.----James Harrison is 35 years old, with wear and tear of 10 NFL seasons on his body leading to questions about just how effective he can be for the long haul after signing a two-year deal with Cincinnati in April. But those aren't doubts you'd ever want to bring directly to Harrison, a perpetually testy man whose short wick is part of what makes him such a force. As an outside linebacker, Harrison remains a significant threat as a pass rusher and was better than expected as a run-stopper during the preseason. His veteran knowledge and fire has been welcome in a young linebackers room that includes fellow starters Vontaze Burfict (22 years old) and Rey Maualuga (26). Harrison's edginess also seems to add swagger to the Bengals defense overall.Said Atkins: "He has that little nasty streak about him that I think is going to give us an edge."----In the long run, Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert figures to be a big-time playmaker, smart and athletic enough to exploit holes in zone coverages. But how much the former Notre Dame standout will contribute in his NFL debut is iffy. Eifert was slowed by a wrist injury during the preseason and had three catches for 32 yards overall in August. It may take some time for him to hit stride here at the next level. But with Jermaine Gresham he gives Cincinnati a 1-2 punch at tight end that has some potential.Said Bears coach Marc Trestman of that duo: "It's challenging because they can move people around and create space. Should it be in regular personnel, decisions will have to be made whether we go nickel or stay regular."dwiederer@tribune.comTwitter @danwiedererCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Chicago Tribune Visit the Chicago Tribune at .chicagotribune.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存倉

Source: The Roanoke Times, Va.迷你倉Sept. 06--BLACKSBURG -- A mass of humanity filed through the buffet line for dinner a few hours before a preseason Virginia Tech practice, one football player after another. It was Mexican night, a popular cuisine among the Hokies, so the trays of food didn't last long.At the end of the line stood Jennie Schafer, Tech's director of sports nutrition, keeping a watchful but not overbearing eye on proceedings. She'll make the rounds throughout the dining area during the meal, checking in to see how players are eating. It's not confrontational. It's supportive. She wants them to enjoy what they eat. In fact, players come up to her to show off their meal. The more color on the plate -- created best by adding multiple fruits and vegetables -- the better."I tweet some of my favorite plates of the night," Schafer said, keeping a camera phone handy. "They just like the attention. And somehow that has made a world of difference."Welcome to the world of sports nutrition. Schafer is one of 45 full-time registered sports dietitians at 39 schools across the country, a growing trend in college athletics, particularly among the football heavyweights.Virginia Tech started its sports nutrition program in 2002 under Amy Freel, who's now at Indiana. Her successor, Schafer, first got into the nutrition side of sports as a basketball player at Roanoke College."I was this player that wanted to know everything to make myself better," Schafer said. "And I knew nothing about nutrition. There was nobody that knew anything about nutrition."She found someone like-minded in Freel. Schafer earned a B.S. at Tech in human nutrition, foods and exercise in 2009, then served as Freel's assistant. She took over as director three years ago, put in charge of nutrition for all of Virginia Tech's 21 sports, helped by assistant Kelly Masteller. Her goal is to educate, not lecture. She wants to provide information to players who want to maximize their performance by eating healthier foods, making small adjustments to their diets to do so."We teach through food, basically," Schafer said. That doesn't mean forcing broccoli down anyone's throats. Much of her job is finding ways to discourage players from going to places like McDonald's, finding food they like to eat, coming up with healthy versions of it and giving it to them throughout the day -- fueling, as Tech's nutrition crew calls it.In training camp, it was busy but relatively easy. Since school wasn't in session, the players were around the practice facility almost all day, so the nutrition staff coordinated all of the team's meals. The breakfast-lunch-dinner paradigm was thrown out the window. With practice every day, players needed energy to get through it. That meant constant eating, four meals (or as the nutrition staff calls them, "training tables") and various snacks throughout the day that added up to around 4,000 to 5,000 calories and could easily get up to 7,000 for the bigger players. Average men consume 2,500 calories a day.A buffet breakfast at 7 a.m., always with oatmeal, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs and more, was mandatory. Those who miss it have to do extra running at practice. The players got a to-go meal at lunch usually catered by an area restaurant. Schafer and her crew add containers of fresh fruit as a healthy side option. With night practice, a buffet-line dinner began at 4:30. Tech uses Professional Caterers, which can do a variety of themes -- Mexican, Italian, Asian and, one of the players' favorites, steak and potatoes, which usually involves a potato bar. Schafer's goal is to keep things enjoyable, not preachy."This is kind of their relaxation time," she said, looking at the dining area as players wolfed down their food. "They're in meetings, thinking and focusing. They're being yelled at in practice. They're being pushed hard. And I still want them to have a social time, a relaxing time where they still enjoy the food."Each meal has options for players trying find the right balance of foods and for those who are picky eaters: a leaner and heavier protein (chicken or steak, for example), high- and low-carb (mac and cheese or roasted potatoes), light desserts (Rice Krispies treats or cobblers) and plenty of drink options (low-fat milk, chocolate milk, l文件倉monade and water). Tech uses brown rice and whole wheat pasta, so players don't even realize they're being fed healthier food.To spice things up, Schafer adds what she calls "morale boosters" every now and then, like ice cream for the cobbler, actual sirloin steak and bacon -- especially, bacon."Before my time, bacon wasn't on the menu a lot," Schafer said. "I see it's so important in their lives that I do bacon more often."After practice, the players got a to-go meal with recovery Gatorade shakes and side items like fresh-cut fruit (a staple at any training table), nuts, peanut butter or bananas.During the day, snacks are available in meeting rooms or at the Fueling Station in the football players' lounge (the recently remodeled Nutrition Oasis is for other sports). Schafer prefers those items be salty, like pretzels, nuts or trail mix. Like every other food Tech provides, it has a purpose. Players can lose as much as 7 or 8 pounds in water weight during a practice, so she wants them to hydrate as much as possible. The fueling stations deal with a number of arcane NCAA limitations. Schafer said the "fruit-nut-bagel bylaw" limits the freebies Tech can give to its athletes during the day. Schools can hand out bagels, fruit, nuts, energy bars, chocolate milk and, created from all that, smoothies. But until recently, cream cheese spreads and jelly were outlawed."It was just silly," Schafer said. "They realized they were being crazy and now we can do spreads."Now that school has started, things become more difficult with the football team. Education becomes more important as players eat the majority of their daily meals on campus, with one nightly meal at Lane Stadium from a menu the nutrition staff creates.Schafer meets with incoming freshmen to explain good eating habits, emphasizing the need to bookend workouts with fuel before and recovery after. Getting to them early helps."They're like, 'Oh, this is the culture of this sport,' " she said. " 'Oh, I'm supposed to eat two fruits and an energy bar,' because that's what we're providing them. So they buy in pretty easy."She arranges grocery store tours with players to show the right kinds of foods they should buy. On one of those trips to Food Lion, she and cornerback Kyle Fuller found a Greek yogurt that the senior still eats regularly today.Schafer tries to fight the misconception that calories are bad, pointing out nutrient-dense, higher-caloric foods and pushing players away from stuff that provides next to no nutritional value, like light cereals and granola bars."Guys will eat Rice Krispies," she said. "I'm like, 'There's nothing in there. Do you really feel like you ate something there?' "On-campus dining is another thing to consider. Virginia Tech's cafeterias are consistently ranked among the country's best, but there are still plenty of food options to steer clear of.Schafer gives athletes handouts of what are good high-performance meal options at each dining hall, supplementing it with "meal shockers" that show how many calories are in foods that should be avoided."Like how many calories are in a [steak] quesadilla at West End?" Schafer said, the answer to which is approximately 1,300 with 80 grams of fat. "And sometimes when they know it, they're like, 'Oh my god, I didn't even know that. I'm not eating that again.' "Education is key. Schafer's office is on the way to the weight room, so it's hard for players to miss her. The nutrition staff's Twitter feed (@HokieFuel) is gaining popularity, offering plenty of food suggestions. The Hokies even handed out Male and Female Nutrition Athlete of the Year awards last spring for the first time.Perhaps the best indication that Schafer's message is getting through came earlier in training camp. Hollywood's, a restaurant in Roanoke, did their once-a-year fried chicken meal for the Hokies, one of the football team's favorites.Near the end of the meal, the owner approached Schafer to tell her that they ran out of vegetables before chicken, a first in his 10 years of providing meals for the team.Schafer's response? "That's because I'm telling them to eat greens!"Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Roanoke Times (Roanoke, Va.) Solid gains seen in mainland August exports and imports after pickup in manufacturing activity and better-than-expected regional dataExpanding manufacturing activity and better-than-expected regional trade figures could point to an increase in China’s trade last month, driven by a recovery in the United States and European economies and stronger domestic demand.儲存倉Rising export orders and domestic investment helped push the official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index to 51 last month, the highest since May last year, fuelling expectations of a stronger August trade. Official trade data for the month is due tomorrow.Confidence in global recovery got another boost after South Korea on Monday reported an unexpected 7.7 per cent year-on-year gain in exports last month, far exceeding the expectations of 3.8 per cent growth.UBS Securities estimates China’s exports may have increased about 8.5 per cent last month, compared with a 5.1 per cent rise in July. Imports are likely to have climbed 12.5 per cent, from July’s 10.9 per cent increase, thanks to recovering domestic demand, restocking and a pickup in some commodities prices.Mizuho Securities has a similar projection, saying exports grew 8 per cent while imports were up 12 per cent.“We believe the August PMI data is evidence that the economy is now bottoming out, partly due to the rebound of both domestic and external demand, and the growth-stabilising policies launched in July,” said Mizuho’s Shen Jianguang.Nevertheless, some analysts said their optimism was curbed by the yuan’s strength in view of the depreciation in regional currencies, including the Japanese yen. They said exports might have cooled slightly and the trade outlook was also clouded by rising global geopolitical risks in countries such as Syria.Barclays Capital’s Chang Jian predicted exports to have grown 3.5 per cent from August last year while imports rose 8 per cent.Currencies in the region, such as the Indonesian rupiah and the Indian rupee, continue to fal迷你倉價錢 against the US dollar since the Federal Reserves first mentioned in May the likelihood of tapering the ultra-loose monetary policy, causing foreign funds to flow out of emerging markets.China has kept the yuan basically stable, making exports more expensive compared with its competitors.“The underlying export momentum has likely picked up further, as predicted by the improving US and European economies,” said UBS economists led by Wang Tao in a research note. “However, the strength of China’s exports may continue to be constrained by [the yuan’s] appreciation relative to other Asian and [emerging market] currencies.”The US economy expanded at a better-than-expected 2.5 per cent annualised rate in the second quarter while in the euro zone, factories were the busiest last month in more than two years.China’s port data improved, too. In July, port throughput rose 9.2 per cent from a year earlier to 16.5 million 20-foot equivalent units, according to a report by the Economic Daily. The gain accelerated from a 7 per cent growth in June and 4.8 per cent rise in July last year, the report said. The port throughput data was found more accurate than official customs data earlier this year as a large amount of hot money was discovered to have flowed into the country through fake trade deals betting on yuan appreciation. The regulators later tightened the controls on cross-border speculative funds flows. Following the crackdown, exports showed their first annual fall in 17 months in June. Imports also dropped.Although trade improved significantly in July, analysts said the road ahead would be bumpy.Li Jian, a senior researcher at an institute under the Ministry of Commerce, forecast exports and imports to maintain a moderate, single-digit average growth in the second half of this year. He also said depreciation in regional currencies was the main challenge. For the whole year, Li said, China’s trade growth might be close to, but not necessarily meet the official target of, 8 per cent growth.

Source: Chicago TribuneSept.自存倉 05--When out-of-state politicians show up in Chicago on poaching missions, they generally unleash fighting words. They want to steal Illinois jobs. The mayor of Minneapolis, who is expected here Thursday, has fighting words too, but he's coating them in a message of love. With same-sex marriage legal in Minnesota since Aug. 1, he's out to win wedding business from Chicago's gay community. In doing so, he's effectively linking arms with Illinois politicians who favor legalizing same-sex marriage -- and who hope the Minneapolis salvo will spur action in Springfield in the next session."I'm a strong supporter of marriage equality and I hope someday Illinois will take away the advantage Minnesota has," R.T. Rybak said. "In the meantime, we're open for business."He is expected to unveil a small-scale advertising campaign inviting same-sex couples to marry in his city during a news conference Thursday morning in Chicago's Boystown area in the Lakeview neighborhood."Hey Chicago! I want to marry you in Minneapolis" is the tagline in the print ads running this week in Windy City Times, a publication serving Chicago's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and RedEye, a free tabloid owned by Tribune Co., publisher of the Chicago Tribune. The ad features a smiling caterer next to a three-tiered wedding cake.Chicago is the first stop on a campaign that is expected to move on to Milwaukee, Madison, Denver and possibly Detroit."These are all logical parts of the center of the country where some people don't have the same rights as in Minnesota," said Rybak, who hopes to attract not only wedding business and tourism, but full-time residents."We recognize this is a long-term business advantage for luring talent and entrepreneurs," he said. His appearance comes three months after an effort to legalize same-sex marriage died in the Illinois legislature. The measure had passed the state Senate, but supporters did not call it to a vote on the House floor because they weren't able to gather sufficient votes. As a courtesy, Rybak alerted Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office of his planned visit, and the visit was welcomed, according to John Stiles, a spokesman for Rybak. The tone of the visit is one of friendly competition, not something more cutthroat, he said.Emanuel, Gov. Pat Quinn, Choose Chicago Chairman Desiree Rogers and Illinois Tourism Director Jen Hoelze are using the occasion to call for the General Assembly to approve same-sex marriage in order to protect tourism here."Thirteen states have extended marriage to all loving, committed couples -- but Illinois has not," Emanuel said in a statement. "That is bad for Chicago, bad for Illinois, and bad for our local economy and the jobs it creates." He has made boosting tourism a cornerstone of his economic development agenda.Whether gays flock to Minneapolis for marriage remains to be 迷你倉新蒲崗een. Several community members said Wednesday that they were not moved by the overture and would rather fight for marriage rights in Illinois."We're pretty tied to Chicago," said Kieren Ladner, 60, a Lakeview resident who has discussed marriage possibilities with his partner of 31 years. If they were to travel to get married, they would head to California, where they have friends, said Ladner, who is a volunteer at the Center on Halsted, a community center for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the site of Rybak's news conference.Still, such out-of-state treks are becoming more common. Since same-sex marriage became legal in Iowa in 2009, 544 couples from Illinois tied the knot there, which represents 9 percent of the 5,926 same-sex marriages in that period, according to the Windy City Times, citing Iowa Department of Public Health data. And a number of hoteliers, including Raymond Vermolen, general manager of the InterContinental Chicago, are concerned about Illinois' potential for losing further lucrative business to Minnesota. From his previous experience at an InterContinental in Los Angeles, he observed that same-sex marriages "usually are well-designed, upper upscale events," he said, often with higher budgets than opposite-sex weddings.Hotel organizations clearly are eager to gain the business. A page on the Hilton Hotels & Resorts website aimed at gay and lesbian travelers trumpets "Marriage Equality in Minneapolis" and directs visitors to the company's offerings there. In Minnesota, acceptance of same-sex marriage has grown to the point where opinion over the issue is evenly split, according to a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll in June. But the newspaper's reporting also found Twin Cities wedding planners who were wrestling with how to welcome gay couples without alienating other clients. While they sort this out, however, Minneapolis is pushing forward with its ad campaign, which will be conducted in partnership with Meet Minneapolis, its convention and visitors association. There is a big potential upside. The Williams Institute, a UCLA-based think tank that does research on sexual orientation and gender identity, estimated this year that legalization of same-sex marriage in Illinois could spur as much as $103 million in wedding and tourism spending over three years. The state's hospitality establishment would like to keep that money here."The failure to pass a marriage equality bill is taking a real toll on our local tourism, lodging and wedding-related industries," Rogers, of tourism agency Choose Chicago, said in a statement. "The only way Chicago will stay competitive is to take a stand for equality."Freelance reporter Cheryl V. Source: The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.自存倉C.Sept. 05--DURHAM -- The city's first public art project, a mural commemorating the city's role in the civil rights movement, has been delayed until 2014 to allow the artist time to find another site in downtown Durham. The original site was sold earlier this year. The mural project, announced in December, was originally planned for the eastern wall of the building at 112 W. Main St., and was scheduled to be completed sometime in May.Because the new owner has development plans, "I decided to push forward and look for a new location," said Brenda Miller Holmes, the artist coordinating the project for the city. She wants to begin painting the mural in May 2014 for a June completion.Holmes said she wants to keep the mural downtown and has three possible sites, which she declined to disclose. Before a site is chosen, she will likely have to present a proposal to Durham's Historic Preservation Commission, which oversees external changes to historic buildings.Holmes, an artist and arts educator, has led previous mural projects in the San Francisco area. For the Durham project, she assembled 30 Durham residents, ages 15 to 65, of different backgrounds, to design the mural. Each member of the design team has done individual drawings for a mural, but because the mural is site-specific, a building must be chosen before a final design gets picked, Holmes said.Team members have responded well to the process, which Holmes said "turned into something bigger than a mural.... I had a number of students who are leaving for college who put their heart and soul into this project" and were glad for the delay because they want to continue to participate, she said.Money for the $20,000 project came from the Durham Cultural Master Plan, which included funds for a pilot p迷你倉新蒲崗oject in public art. In addition to design work, the project has included several discussions of local civil rights history.Tax records show that the building at 112 W. Main St. was sold in January this year to Empress Development LLC of Raleigh. The new owners applied for a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Durham City-County Planning Department for renovations to the building. The application was approved in July. The Main Street building adjoins a historic building at 109 W. Parrish St. The developers plan to renovate the property to include a restaurant on the Main Street side, and possible retail and other uses on the Parrish Street side, said Dawn Paige, manager of Empress Development. A development map of the proposal filed with the city shows new windows for the wall at 112 W. Main. Paige said she was still open to allowing the mural to be painted there.Because any downtown mural likely will be painted on a historic building, it must go before the Historic Preservation Commission. The commission has not seen any proposals for a new mural site, said Helen Wagner, chairwoman. The commission has, however, met with the city's Cultural Advisory Board to try and help the process along, Wagner said. The commission is trying to work on the rules to see if approval of public art can be accomplished through an administrative decision, rather than through the full Certificate of Appropriateness process, she said.Holmes said she plans to partner with the Durham History Museum to keep the project in the public eye."We might show sneak peeks of the drawings. We are working to keep the community involved in the project," she said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.)
