Source: Tulsa World, Okla.倉Jan. 01--With $355,489 raised for families in need over the holidays, Tulsa World readers have again stepped up, helping the 2013 Neediest Families Fund Drive not only meet but overwhelmingly exceed its goal.This year's goal was $325,000, an increase over the previous year's $300,000 goal, which was also surpassed, with $318,853 raised.The new tally means that since 1993, the Tulsa World's first year to be involved, the drive has raised more $5.6 million total for families aided by the Salvation Army.Tulsa World Publisher Bill Masterson said, "As this was my first experience with the Neediest Families Fund Drive, I can't tell you how humbled I am at the generosity of the Tulsa community. I am also so proud of the Tulsa World staff who donate their time, money and resources to the very important cause. What a wonderful helping hand."In a series of stories that kicked off on Thanksgiving Day, the World spotlighted three Tulsa-area families a week, 12 total, through Christmas Day.The families were selected by the Salvation Army.All the money raised goes to the charity, which distributes it in the form of vouchers and material 24小時迷你倉ifts.Maj. Jim Taylor, Salvation Army Tulsa Area commander, said the organization was "humbled and blessed" by the outpouring of support from the community."We know that this is a tradition of giving for many and we appreciate their generosity and loyalty," he said. "The fund drive goes a long way to helping us meet some of the greatest needs of our fellow citizens in their most dire times."Known originally as the Santa Pal project, the Neediest Families Fund traces its origins to 1928, when it was started by the Tulsa Tribune.The Tribune began partnering with the Salvation Army for the project in 1948, with the Tulsa World stepping in when the Tribune closed in 1992.Taylor said: "Although our visibility is more heightened during the holidays, it is important for the community to know that our programs are ongoing.
