Source: South Bend Tribune, Ind.mini storageDec. 14--NILES -- Niles' shooting in its boys basketball season opener Friday night was as cold as the weather. The Vikings missed 14 of their first 15 shots, hit only 28 percent for the game and fell to Mattawan, 55-46."We got a ton of shots," said Niles coach Todd Pawielski. "Offensively, we did a lot of good things. We just have to finish. We missed a lot of shots inside of three feet and we missed a lot of wide open 3s. Sixty-five shots is enough. We just have to make more."First-year Mattawan coach Ward Helakoski thought his team having a game under its belt made a big difference."Niles is athletic and they're going to be just fine," Helakoski said. "But that first game is hard sometimes. I thought we executed when we needed to and did a good job of getting to the basket in the second half. Every time they made a run, we made one right back."Niles didn't get its first field goal until Gavin Rasler scored inside just before the first-quarter buzzer. And the Vikings were behind 21-12 late in the second quarter and 26-17 midway through the third period. But even with the shooting woes, Niles had plenty of chances to win the game. A 15-2 run late in the third quarter gave the Vikings their first lead at 32-28. But the Wildcats scored the final seven points of the third quarter to take the lead back at 35-32.Niles rallied to tie the game at 41-41 with three minutes remaining. But Gabe Pelak hit a 3 to start a clinching string of nine straight points by Mattawan."It was very disappointing," Pawielski said. "We take a four-point lead in the third and gave up two straight layups. We tie the game in the fourth quarter. But with the game on the line, our defense was nowhere to be found. We stood and watched and迷你倉didn't stop the ball. It's very frustrating that our defense wasn't good enough to win the game on a night when we couldn't make anything offensively."Mattawan, 2-0, got 19 points from Pelak, including four treys. Darek Ditto added 17 points and seven rebounds, Myles Nesbitt had seven points and eight rebounds and Caleb Doonan added seven points and seven rebounds.Tate Brawley scored 12 points for Niles, but hit just 3-of-19 field goal attempts. Brawley also had four assists. The Vikings got a big boost off the bench from Jeremy Wortham (10 points, 4 rebounds) and Ra'Quon Glenn (3 assists, 2 steals). Gabriel Stokes had nine points for Niles and Rasler contributed seven points and 10 rebounds.MATTAWAN (55): Darek Ditto 7 3-4 17, Ben Richardson 2 1-3 5, Caleb Doonan 1 4-4 7, Myles Nesbitt 3 1-2 7, Gabe Pelak 7 1-2 19, Joey Knapp 0 0-0 0, Nick Haldes 0 0-0 0.
