There are 12,800 people in Singapore who are 90 years old and above.self storage SundayLife! meets four of them and finds out what keeps them going strongLiving healthily and staying active well into your 90s is no longer such an anomaly.Singapore is home to 12,800 people aged 90 and above, according to resident population estimates at the end of June. This is 700 more than last year. There are 11,800 nonagenarians, while another 1,000 have lived past the century mark. The sizeable number may partly be explained by medical advances as well as the fact that these very senior citizens were born at a time when people all over the world had large families. From interviews with nonagenarians, SundayLife! found that they tend to have a strong family or social support network. Most have not suffered a major illness before, which for some individuals can sap their will to live.Gerontologist Kalyani Mehta identifies four key factors for longevity: a positive attitude towards life, being generally healthy and mobile, strong family or community support and, finally, a belief system that gives meaning to life."Very often, we underestimate the power of the last factor. But in my view, when one reaches the 90s, material life is less important than spiritual life," says Associate Professor Mehta, who is head of SIM University's gerontology programme.Four 90-somethings share their life stories and secrets of ageing well with SundayLife!, giving a peek into the spirit of a generation that lived through hard times and upheaval.clare@sph.com.sgDevelop green fingersMR LOW HAI NG, 94Family and friends always know where to find Mr Low - watering, pruning and weeding at the communal farm beside his HDB block in Bukit Batok. The oldest among a few elderly, experienced gardeners in the community who maintain the farm, he spends a few hours there every day. It is a small strip of land with more than 10 banana and chiku trees, a vegetable patch and more than 60 flowering plants and bonsai. The vegetables are used by the residents' committee's cooking interest group to prepare dishes such as Hakka lei cha fan (thunder tea rice).Mr Low, who has never had a major illness or been hospitalised, is fit enough to do the heavy lifting in the garden, from digging and tilling to constructing bamboo trellises for the vines."But if it's too tough, I ask my younger friends to help," he says in Hokkien. His friends range in age from 50s to 77.He is also vice-chairman of the neighbourhood's senior citizens' executive committee, which makes him one of the oldest grassroots leaders around."I have done manual labour all my life. We used to grow vegetables when my family lived in a kampung in Bukit Panjang. Gardening is something I know and keeps me fit," says the father of 10 children, all in their 50s and 60s.The last place he wants to be is cooped up at home. "I want to be active in the community. I like the kampung spirit of neighbours helping one another."He lives in a four-room HDB flat with two of his sons, one single and the other married with two children. His wife, Madam Kek Swee Lan, died more than 10 years ago of liver cancer when she was in her 60s.In all, Mr Low has more than 20 grandchildren ("I've lost count of how many") ranging in age from six to 40-something. He relishes spending time with them, particularly the two who live with him, who are aged 10 and six.He is happiest walking the two grandchildren to their schools in the neighbourhood every day and having coffee with other elderly friends at a neighbourhood kopi tiam.Ask him what is his secret to a long, healthy life and he laughs. "Don't smoke, don't drink, eat in moderation and have no bad habits," says the non-smoker and teetotaller. He has perfect eyesight and does not wear glasses. His only ailment is high-blood pressure, for which he takes medication every day.As for his diet, he eats "simple bland food, not too oily or salty", mostly cooked by his daughter-in-law. He likes vegetables and fruit and takes red meat only occasionally. His one quirk is a dislike of fish or seafood. "I don't like the fishy smell," he explains.Mr Low was born in 1919 to a farming family in Ankui village in China's south-eastern Fujian province. The oldest of four children, he never went to school and started working in the rice fields from a young age.At age 16, he came to Singapore with an uncle to look for work. He took on odd jobs, such as being a rubber tapper and delivery boy.He and his wife were introduced by mutual friends and got married when he was 24 and she was in her teens. As the size of their brood grew, he became a miner in a stone quarry, a job that involved long hours and was "quite dangerous because you had to use explosives, but paid better than other labouring jobs". His wife held the fort at home, bringing up the kids.Back then, he says, "my life was work, come home, eat, shower, sleep. I just wanted to earn enough to feed 10 kids. There was no money left over to smoke or drink, so I had to control myself".He could not afford to send some of his children to school. But he is pleased that some of his grandchildren have made it to university. "That's progress," he says.A Taoist, he goes to the temple during religious festivals and says he does not think about dying."I live one day at a time. I have always lived a simple life, I don't have high expectations," he says.Embrace the simple pleasures in lifeMR THOMAS CHACKO, 93A slight deafness is the only trace of Mr Chacko's advanced age - he can move around unaided and his jet black hair has only a faint sprinkling of grey. That he is a little hard of hearing is the outcome of more than four eventful decades spent glued to a headset and a wireless set, first intercepting Japanese messages during World WarII and then, during peacetime in Singapore, sending and receiving signals to and from ships.Born in Kerala in south-west India to a farming family, the third of seven children completed high school and was a Malayalam teacher for a few years. Then he joined the Indian Army in 1942 at the age of 21. The reason: The army paid better.India was a British colony and played a key role in the war against Japan. "Because I was educated, I was assigned to be a signaller," he says.In a remote camp on India's north-west frontier, he and other signallers hunkered down with their wireless sets and learnt to decode and transcribe Japanese signals. After the Japanese were defeated, he was sent to Singapore in 1946. The British were helping the Dutch fight Indonesian insurgents and needed signallers to intercept Indonesian messages.By this time, Mr Chacko was weary of army life and wanted to settle down. A few years after arriving here, he found a civilian job as a signaller for Telecoms, the precursor of SingTel. The signalling unit was housed in Kallang Airport, later Paya Lebar Airport, and its job was to communicate with ships in Singapore waters and all over South-east Asia.In 1951, he married his wife, Annamma, who is now 81. Theirs was an arranged marriage - like him, she is a Syrian Christian from Kerala. They went on to have four sons and a daughter, who are aged 46 to 61.Their first home was a double-storey house shared with a few families in a Malay kampung in Jalan Selamat, Geylang. Then they moved to a five-room flat in the Telecoms staff quarters in Yio Chu Kang. They were there for nearly 20 years, surrounded by facilities, such as a football field and a tennis court."That was where I picked up tennis. I used to play tennis almost every day until three years ago, when my family stopped me because of my age," he says with a smile. They moved to their present home, a semidetached house in Seletar Hills, in 1989. Today, Mr Chacko lives there with his wife and two of his sons, Flame Of The Forest publisher Alex and Georgy, both single. The rest of the family visit regularly, particularly daughter Grace and her two daughters Charis, three, and Shauna, nine. In all, Mr Chacko has seven grandchildren, the oldest of whom is 28.He retired from his signaller job in 1985 at the age of 65. His last workplace was the now-defunct Civil Radio Receiving Station at Yio Chu Kang. Ship-shore communications now comes under SingTel and relies on computers and satellites. As a result, the work of sigmini storageallers like him has been phased out.Looking back on his life, Mr Chacko says he feels"extremely blessed. I don't feel like an old man". He has never suffered a major illness. He delights in simple pleasures such as taking walks with his family at a small park near their house or eating his wife's tangy fish curry with mashed tapioca, a Kerala staple."I eat at home all the time and nothing beats my wife's cooking because it's cooked with love," he says.He enjoys being driven by his sons to the places of his past and seeing what has changed ("Kallang Airport is still there, Jalan Selamat is totally unrecognisable") and he also keeps in touch with current affairs and watches news programmes on television. He is philosophical about the prospect of death. "Whenever God calls me, I will go. I don't think too far ahead, I just live every day that God gives me," he says.Play dominoes with friendsMADAM LAU SOON SIANG, 93The Toa Payoh resident, who has never had a major illness and walks briskly without the aid of a walking stick, remembers her younger days with crystal-clear clarity.Madam Lau can rattle off details from 70 or 80 years ago, from when she first came to Singapore - she was 10 - to her late husband's $30 pay cheque as a chauffeur in the 1940s.Ironically, it is on recent events that her memory fails her. "My mind is like a rubbish bin filled with all the old things. But if you ask me what happened this morning, I cannot remember," she exclaims in Teochew.Home is a two-room rental flat where she lives with the fourth of her seven children, Mr Ng Yeck Kwan, 66, and his wife, both factory workers. Madam Lau's husband, Mr Huang Ah Zheng (Ng is the dialect rendition of Huang), died 21 years ago of heart failure at age 82.She spends the better part of her weekdays at the neighbourhood Seniors Activity Centre, when her son and daughter-in-law are at work. The centre is run by Care Corner, a voluntary welfare organisation. There, the outgoing nonagenarian enjoys playing games such as dominoes with friends - "it's addictive, I can play it for a few hours at a stretch" - and takes part in the exercise classes and craft activities, which are free for members.Once a month, she looks forward to catching up over zi char dinners with various branches of her huge extended family - she has 13 grandchildren in their 30s and 40s and nine great-grandchildren of school-going age."Now is the best time of my life. All my children are married and some are grandparents. I don't have to worry about them and I just take things one day at a time," she says. She is illiterate and never went to school, like many women of her generation. The saddest moment in her life, she says, was losing her father during the Japanese Occupation. He was an itinerant jewellery-maker from the village of Beh Swa Kio in Chaozhou in southern China. The family had moved with him to Bangkok - where Madam Lau, the middle of three children, was born in 1920. They later came to Singapore where her father found work at a goldsmith's.At the age of 54, he was one of thousands of Chinese civilians rounded up by the Japanese in the Sook Ching massacre of 1942. His body was never found."He went out to buy yew char kueh (dough fritters) for breakfast and never came back. Someone saw him being tied up and taken away. We were close - I was the only daughter - and it was very hard to accept that he had been killed," she recalls matter- of-factly, the decades having blunted the grief.Today, she is the only surviving member of her immediate family. Also tough was bringing up five sons and two daughters. At 17, she was matchmade to her then 27-year-old husband. At 19, she had her first child. She single-handedly raised the kids as he worked long hours as a chauffeur and lorry driver."They were all born two to three years apart. I breastfed all of them and when the younger ones slept, I cleaned the house and cooked for the older kids," she recounts. For nearly 40 years, the family lived in a twobedroom attap house in a kampong in Hougang. Later, the Government acquired the land and resettled them in an HDB flat in Toa Payoh.Accustomed to hardship, she lives and eats simply. Meals are usually either economy rice from hawker stalls or plain porridge, which she cooks and eats with salted fish and canned preserves. Her one indulgence is durians. "I used to skip dinner and pig out on three durians at night," she says with a laugh. Now, she eats only small quantities of the cholesterol-laden fruit as she has high blood pressure.Nonetheless, "as long as I can eat and can walk, I am happy".A Buddhist, she has never been hospitalised before and fears a debilitating illness. "I just hope to pass on peacefully in my sleep," she says.Enjoy the company of loved onesMADAM CHUA KIM NOY, 94Having to move around with a walking stick does not stop Madam Chua from doing what she does best - making Chinese desserts. She can often be found seated at a table in the kitchen, making from scratch tang yuan (glutinous rice balls with peanut filling) or snow skin mooncakes with white lotus paste.Another favourite of her huge extended family is her agar agar, fashioned into pastel-coloured roses and goldfish using moulds and homemade food dyes, and delicately flavoured with coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk.Madam Chua has seven children, aged 50something to 75, 13 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren. Her desserts are served when they gather at her home, a semi-detached house in Bukit Timah, on weekends or festive occasions. She lives with her youngest daughter Geraldine, who works in the financial sector, son-in-law William, an IT professional, and their two daughters, Susanna and Joanna, who are both in their early 20s and recent graduates, one doing post-graduate studies. Madam Chua's husband, Mr Toh Kim Whee, died of age-related ailments in 1963 at age 68."I love to cook. I used to memorise recipes that I heard on Rediffusion," she says in Teochew. A former housewife, she is illiterate and never went to school. Her other specialities include bakwan kepiting (crab meat ball soup), mee siam, ngoh hiang and duck soup with salted vegetables. She no longer prepares such elaborate and labour-intensive dishes, having passed her recipes on to her four daughters and Filipino domestic helper.Born in 1920 in Swatow in southern China, she was the third of four children from a poor farming family. Her parents came here to eke out a living. At the age of 16 in Singapore, she entered into an arranged marriage. Her husband, also Teochew, was an educated shipping clerk. For many years, their home was a three-bedroom attap house in a kampung in Hougang, which they shared with Madam Chua's brother's family of seven. She grew crops such as sugarcane and sweet potato on their plot of land and also reared chickens and ducks which she slaughtered for meals. To save money, the soft-spoken, enterprising housewife made clothes for all her children as well as curtains and other furnishings. To earn extra income, she was a babysitter for other families' children. She also made kueh bangkit, love letters and other delicacies to sell during Chinese New Year. Her fondest memory of those days is of her husband, an amateur musician, playing traditional Chinese instruments such as the yangqin and erhu at home. "In his free time, he would play for me. I enjoyed listening to pieces such as the Butterfly Lovers Concerto and Teochew folk songs," she recalls with a smile.Today, she closes her eyes whenever her granddaughter Susanna plays these tunes for her on the piano every few days, as it reminds her of her late husband. He eventually became a manager in the shipping company and the family moved to an HDB flat in Dover Road.Madam Chua, a Catholic, says her greatest happiness is "to be surrounded by all my family". Since she turned 90, the entire clan has celebrated her birthday every year with a big bash at a restaurant. She suffered from stomach cancer several years ago and had half her stomach removed. These days, she eats six small meals daily prepared by the maid, including two egg whites, one egg yolk and sweet potatoes."I seldom cook now compared to before and I miss that. But it is God's grace to be blessed with longevity and the love of family," she says.

Source: Houston ChronicleOct.mini storage 19--When Radio One founder Cathy Hughes was 8, she said during a recent Houston visit, "I imagined I had a radio show in our bathroom."She lived in low-income public housing in Omaha, Neb., she recalled, and she'd lock the door while she played."I only did news. My toothbrush was my microphone," Hughes said. "Sometimes my brothers would be waiting outside to attack me, and they became the lead story."Hughes still loves radio news, but Radio One is mostly about R&B, rap, hip-hop, urban adult contemporary, gospel and soul -- as well as urban talk shows hosted by Al Sharpton, Roland Martin and others. The Washington, D.C.-based radio network owns 55 stations, with four in Houston, including FM stalwarts The Box 97.9 and Majic102, locally rated Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. But Hughes has a soft spot for another of her Houston holdings, News 92 FM, the only all-news station in the chain."It makes me happy that we're the first and only African-American run company" to have a 24-hour-news station in the general market, said Hughes, who is now 66 and chairwoman of the company. Her son Alfred Liggins is CEO.For Radio One, News 92 has been a challenge. Its ratings are nothing like those for top-rated The Box, a rhythmic Top 40 format, or the adult urban contemporary Majic102.News 92 has been rated 25th out of 44 locally in the Nielson Audio market profile over the past four months. But Radio One is not about to give up on news, she said, and for good reason.Revenue driversAll-news radio stations can be strong revenue generators, said Frank Saxe, managing editor of Inside Radio, an industry trade publication. The all-news format "over-performs" in revenue in relation to its ratings, he said, because its listeners represent a high-income, highly educated demographic. The all-news WTOP in Washington, D.C., has the highest revenue from ad sales of any station the U.S., he said. With News 92, Radio One can go after a mainstream audience, "where most of the fish are," he said.Music stations are limited in the number of commercials they can run because the ads are perceived as disruptive by listeners, said Don Watson, president of News Talk Media, a Pensacola, Fla.-based consulting firm. He was news and program director for Houston's KPRC radio in the 1970s when it was a news station. But with spoken-word radio formats, he said, ads are viewed as a form of information and not as intrusive -- at least to a degree. That means talk and news shows can run more ads per hour.Unlike some political talk-radio formats, which can scare away some advertisers, all-news is a safe environment, Saxe said. He said that's increasingly important in the age of social media, where controversy can spread quickly. But all-news stations are expensive to run because they require larger staffs. News 92 has about 50 employees, including locally known members of the media.Morning anchors J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes were fixtures at KTRH-740 AM when it was a news station and moving more into talk radio. Former television personalities Mike Barajas, Carolyn Campbell and Craig Roberts are also on-air, for example. Norm Uhl is managing editor.'Breaking the mold'News 92 airs a mixture of national news on the hour, local headlines, traffic, weather, sports, business and local stories a minute or so in length."Over the past decade, we haven't seen many all-news stations sign on," Saxe said. "They're breaking the mold a little bit." It often takes three years for a music station to catch on, and five years for all-news, he said.All-news is a tough format today, but it can be done, Watson saself storaged, if it offers compelling, reliable programming."Houston is a big city with a lot of traffic," he said, "and you know you've got a lot of people in those cars."In the important morning hours, News 92 has competition from KUHF-88.7 FM with "Morning Edition," a well-known brand from National Public Radio, Watson said. But Saxe sees NPR and News 92 as more complementary than competitive."NPR is more deeper insight news, and News 92 is more for quick headlines, traffic and weather," he said. "It's for shorter-term listening. People use it as a utility."What drives trafficDoug Abernethy, regional vice president of Radio One's Houston stations, said News 92 has not had the opportunity to cover the big kind of story that would allow it to stand out."Since we launched we haven't had a tropical storm or hurricane, that huge traffic driver where everyone scrambles to the news stations," he said."We did wall-to-wall coverage of the 2012 elections and aired all the presidential debates, but we were so new, and nobody knew about us."Abernethy acknowledged that there are so many ways people can get their news today."But," he added, "we still own the dashboard."During a Radio One quarterly conference call in February, Liggins said Houston, the company's largest market, "is on fire," driven by the local economy.Ratings for Radio One's Houston urban music stations are "up substantially," he said. The Box has been consistently drawing about 1.3 million cumulative listeners on average per week, according to Nielsen Media.Liggins also said News 92 has "a whole new pool of advertisers ... even though the ratings haven't really gone to where we want them to go."Radio One also owns a local HD gospel station, Praise 102.1 HD2.The company had total revenues of $380 million last year.'The Quiet Storm'Before Hughes launched Radio One in 1980, she was general manager of Howard University's WHUR, where she created the late-night romantic-music format "The Quiet Storm," featuring love ballads. At its peak, The Quiet Storm aired on 487 stations. Those numbers have dwindled, but it still can be heard nightly on Majic102.After WHUR, she went to 33 banks before she secured a loan for her and then-husband Dewey Hughes to buy WOL, a Washington, D.C., music station in 1979. The Hugheses divorced soon after. The station struggled at first, and she lost her house and had her car repossessed and had to live in the station, Hughes said. She changed the station format from music to talk and did a lot of the talking. "The Cathy Hughes Show," aimed at African-American listeners, ran from 1980 to 1998.Radio One acquired other stations, and when it went public in 1999, she became one of the first female African-American women to head a publicly traded company. Her mother, Helen Jones Woods, also blazed a music-related trail. She was a trombonist in the jazz and swing group, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, considered the first integrated all-women's band in the U.S.'There's a trust factor'While News 92 is Radio One's only all-news outlet, Hughes said all the company's stations can sometimes serve a news-related role."Black radio is a cultural phenomenon," she said. "There's a trust factor. Black radio replaced black-owned newspapers and magazines of yesterday and is second only to black churches when it comes to trust and believability."During the attacks of Sept. 11, Hughes said, "many African-Americans watched TV with the sound off and tuned in to black radio stations."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Houston Chronicle Visit the Houston Chronicle at .chron.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

Source: The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.迷你倉最平C.Oct. 19--DURHAM -- Bill Evans loves a parade, especially when it happens at his alma mater -- N.C. Central University. That's why Evans, who has attended every Homecoming but one since he graduated in 1962, had a sunny demeanor Saturday morning as it rained lightly on the school's parade."I love seeing people that you haven't seen in a long time," Evans, who earned his 50-year NCCU Eagles pin last year, said. "I love the parade -- and sometimes the football game," he said with a laugh.Evans was one of dozens of NCCU alumni who gathered for coffee and pastries at the university's alumni house on Fayetteville Street as they waited for the parade to begin. The procession, which included eight floats and more than 600 participants, began at W.G. Pearson Elementary School on Fayetteville Street and ended at Lawson Street at the university campus.Marching band members transformed a dreary morning into a feast for the ears -- with drums, clarinets, trombones and flutes bringing a crowd of hundreds to its feet. One woman in a wheelchair pulled past the curb to get a good look. The smell of grilled turkey legs and hot dogs filled the air as the band played on.NCCU alumna Pecolia Josey Grove, Class of 1961, said she loves Homecoming."The campus has expanded so much from the time I was here," she said. "I like to see old friends and make new ones, and to see the changes and improvements."Grove, from Hartsville, S.C., retired after working in Fayetteville with the N.C. Department of Correction and as a school social worker. She made it through NCCU (known the迷你倉 as N.C. College at Durham), in 2 1/2 years by attending classes year-round."I was a very serious student," she said. "Most people come to college, and they're into partying, but I came from a family of 11 and was the oldest, so I had a lot of responsibility from the beginning."Louise Wilkins Weeks, who graduated in 1971, has lived in Durham most her life. She said Homecoming is one event she tries not to miss."Watching the parade is a big part of why I come -- getting up early and waving as it goes by," she said. "And I go to the football game. I always end with that."For Tania Butler Davis, president of the NCCU Alumni Association, Homecoming is "a time when the campus just livens up.""When I was a student, it was always interesting to see what the alumni looked like, because you could almost see their success," she said. "They come back sharply dressed, looking good and bright-eyed. They hug, talk and cry. It's a great, very family-oriented time."Davis graduated in 1994, and works in Washington for NASA as a senior procurement analyst. She was furloughed during the recent federal government shutdown, which ended Thursday. That gave her more time to prepare for Homecoming, which drew an estimated 70 people to the alumni house Saturday."As a student, you think: 'One day that's going to be me,' she said of alumni. "And now that it is me, I'm yelling out people's names and hugging them. It's just a great time to be on campus."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.) Source: Philadelphia Daily NewsOct. 18--IF YOU WATCHED their 31-16 win over the Redskins last week, then you know Tony Romo and the Cowboys' big-and-tall-shop receivers aren't the only people the Eagles need to keep out of the end zone on Sunday. They also need to neutralize the Cowboys' dangerous return man, Dwayne Harris.Eagles fans who haven't managed to purge last season's 4-12 disaster from their memories no doubt remember Harris, who had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Cowboys' 38-23 Week 10 win at the Linc.Six weeks into his third pro season, Harris is leading the league in both punt (23.6) and kickoff (34.7) returns. Against the Redskins last week, he returned a second-quarter Sav Rocca punt 86 yards for a touchdown and added a 90-yard kickoff return in the third quarter that Romo parlayed into a touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams that gave the Cowboys a 21-9 lead.Given that the Eagles are ranked 32nd in the league in total defense and 29th in points allowed, they really can't afford to let Harris be a factor in Sunday's game. If he is, you probably will be heading for the exits midway through the third quarter."He's a great player," Eagles special-teams coordinator Dave Fipp said. "He's hot right now. He's had a bunch of big returns this season."Harris has returned nine kickoffs. The 90-yarder against the Redskins has been his only really big return. He also had a 35-yarder against the Chiefs in Week 2 and a 33-yarder against the Chargers in Week 4.He has handled 12 punts, including four fair-catches. Has had 38-, 23- and 22-yard returns in addition to his 86-yard home run vs. the Redskins."He's definitely a difference-maker," said safety Colt Anderson, who is on both coverage teams. "We've got to cover our [butts] off this week."Said safety Kurt Coleman: "Their whole special-teams units are good. But he does a great job of seeing the hole, and he doesn't really stop. A lot of guys, you'll see them slow their feet down. But he knows where the hole's at and he hits it. That's imperative, especially with a kick returner, because the hole closes so fast. Also, his guys do a great job of blocking. They have a good scheme."Coleman and Anderson found that out last year when the Cowboys set up a wall return down the left sideline for Harris on his long punt return against them. One second it looked like they were going to hold him for a minimal gain, the next he was celebrating in the end zone."They have a lot of guys [on their special teams] around 220-250 [pounds] that can move," Coleman said. "They do a good job of doing a lot of traps."Punt returns, if you look at the one he had against the Redskins last week, a guy had a shot at him and ended up pulling his hamstring right when he was coming up to make a tackle. But those guys do a good job of staying with their blocks or finding new blocks."The 5-10, 207-pound Harris isn't shifty like Devon Hester. He's not overly fast. But he is a decisive returner with excellent vision who can spot a crease and get through it.The best strategy against him would be to keep it out of his hands. They might be able to do that on kickoffs. Alex Henery has found his groove on kickoffs and has 13 touchbacks in his last 19 kicks.Punter Donnie Jones has one of the league's better return rates. Just 11 of his 28 attempts this season have been returned. But the Eagles probably aren't going to kick it out of bounds to prevent Harris from getting his hands on the ball."It's easier said than done to put it out of bounds every time," Fipp said. "If you punt it out of bounds every time, are you [willing to] accept the 20-yard punts? If you're willing to accept that, then you can do it. But if you don't like that, at some point the ball may end up in his hands."Jones said the best strategy is to get good hang time on your punts and have your coverage get down the field and cover. The Eagles' coverage units have been inconsistent this season. They are 31st in the league in kick coverage (28.8) and 15th in punt coverage. They gave up a 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to the Broncos Trindon Holliday in Week 4 and a 40-yard punt return last week to the Bucs' Eric Page."I said the very first day we got here that we had a lot of work to do," Fipp said. "We still have a lot of work to do."There have been times when we've covered real well. Last week, we had a 40.8 net [punting average] and we held them to the 20.8-yard line on kickoffs. If you can do both of those things every time, then you're top 10 in the NFL. But it obviously hasn't been that way."Shutting down Harris this week would go a long way to bolstering the special teams' confidence, not to mention improving the Eagles' chances of beating the Cowboys."He's a great returner, but he can be stopped like anybody else," said cornerback Brandon Boykin, who is one of the gunners on the Eagles' punt coverage team. "We've been able to keep them contained for the most part except for a couple of plays. We'll be all right."Third-down woesYou no doubt have noticed that the Eagles' defense has had a little bit of difficulty getting off the field on third down. They are 26th in the league in opponent third-down percentage (.425), and have been particularly inept at just saying no on third-and-long.In the first six games, opponents have converted 17 of 47 (36.2 percent) third downs of 7 yards or more against the Eagles. That's disgraceful.Last week, they allowed the Bucs to convert a third-and-14, two third-and-9s and two third-and-7s. The Bucs parlayed those extra opportunities into 13 of their 20 points. In their three-point Week 2 loss to the Chargers, they gave up a third-and-8 and third-and-10. Both led to Chargers TDs.The Chiefs converted third downs of 10, 15 and 19 yards in their 26-16 Week 3 win over the Eagles. Two of those third-down conversions resulted in field goals. The defense's current 42.5 percent third-down rate is the highest by the Eagles since 1982.Since '85, the Eagles have had a third-down defensive rate above 40 percent just once. That was last year (40.9)."On third down right now, we just have to kind of tighten the screws a little bit and make sure we get ourselves off the field, especially on third and winnable distance," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said.Figuring the Eagles *The Eagles' have given up 33 catches and 399 yards to opposing tight ends in the first six games, including seven receptions for 91 yards to Bucs rookie Tim Wright last week. That's an 88-catch, 1,064-yard pace. The good news is they have yet to allow a touchdown catch by a tight end. A look at the tight end pass-catching numbers against the Eagles the previous four seasons:Rec. Yds. TD2012. . . 71 787 42011. . . 66 765 52010. . . 79 912 112009. . . 102 1079 10--In the 18 quarters that Michael Vick has played this season, the Eagles have averaged 118.8 yards and 6.5 points per quarter. In the six that Nick Foles has played, they've averaged 93.5 yards and 8.0 points per quarter. They've averaged 5.52 points per 100 yards under Vick, 8.56 under Foles.--The Eagles' defense is 28th in the league in sacks per pass play. They are averaging a sack every 21.2 pass plays. According to data by Pro Football Focus, they have managed to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks on just 30.7 percent of their pass-rushing opportunities. A game-by-game breakdown of their pressures vs. dropbacks:DB PBucs. . . 47 18Giants. . . 53 17Broncos. . . 35 5Chiefs. . . 47 15Chargers. . . 49 12Redskins. . . 56 21--Cornerback Bradley Fletcher has played pretty well in the first six games. He has a team-high 10 knockdowns, including five against the Giants, and has allowed just 19 completions in 37 passes (48.7 percent) thrown in his direction. He has given up two touchdown passes. The Eagles' other starting corner, Cary Williams, has six knockdowns and two interceptions and has allowed completions on 25 of 37 passes (67.6) thrown in his direction. He also has allowed two TDs. Williams has held opponents to 10.1 yards per catch, Fletcher 14.6.--The Eagles have scored 38 points off 10 turmini storageovers in the first six games and have allowed 30 points off eight giveaways for a plus-8 point differential. That's considerably better than last season's minus-100 point differential off of turnovers. Last year, they scored just 40 points off 13 takeaways and gave up 140 off 37 giveaways.--DeSean Jackson suddenly has become a red-zone threat. In the last two games, he has three receptions in the red zone, including two for touchdowns. In the previous four seasons, he had a total of 11 receptions and just five touchdowns in the red zone.--Nine of the Eagles' 18 touchdown drives have been four plays or less. Fourteen of them have lasted less than 2 minutes and 20 seconds.--The Eagles' final scoring drive last week was the second longest of the season in both time (5:29) and plays (12). They had a 15-play, 73-yard drive that lasted 6:32 against the Broncos.--Trent Cole has just 1 1/2 sacks in his last 19 games.--The Eagles' average starting field position in their three wins was the 34.5-yard line. In their three losses: 21.1.2-MINUTE DRILLFROM THE LIP--"It's a crude word to define a Native American, and I would think if Native Americans feel offended, it would make sense to change it."-- Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy on the furor over the Washington Redskins' nickname--"There will be situations, and that's why \[defensive\] guys don't want to pull up. It's happened in the past with Michael Vick or someone like that who has run toward the sidelines, stopped, and then gotten 20 more yards because the \[defensive\] guy runs out of bounds trying not to hit the quarterback."-- Redskins QB Robert Griffin on sideline hits on QBs--"He's a way better athlete than I am. He moves better and he's faster. He has so much speed that it allows him to play a little differently than I do. I have to play straight technical football. He gets to play a little looser because he can recover in a flash and get back in a play."-- Seahawks Pro Bowl CB Richard Sherman on Cardinals CB Patrick PetersonBY THE NUMBERS--Redskins punter Sav Rocca had a 47.0-yard gross average against the Cowboys last week and a 10.7-yard net, thanks to 86- and 23-yard punt returns by Dwayne Harris.--The Titans have held opponents to 19.2 points per game this season, which is the eighth best in the league. Last year, they allowed a league-worst 29.4 points per game.--The combined passer rating of the league's quarterbacks through the first 6 weeks is 86.8. If that number doesn't drop, it would be the highest overall passer rating in league history. The previous high was 85.6, last year.--QB Alex Smith has led his team to a 6-0 start. With a win against the Texans on Sunday, he can tie the post-merger (1970) record for most consecutive wins to start a season in a quarterback's first year. The only guy to do it so far? Dieter Brock of the '85 LA Rams.--The Chiefs already have 30 sacks in their first six games. The record for most sacks in the first seven games of a season is 45 by the '87 Bears.--The Broncos have scored 265 points. That's the most ever by a team in its first six games. The old record was 262 by the 2000 Rams.THIS AND THAT--The Eagles occasionally have used an unbalanced line this season, but never as much as they did in the fourth quarter of the Bucs game. They used an unbalanced line on 10 of 15 snaps on their final two scoring drives in the 31-20 win. Six times, they moved left tackle Jason Peters over to the right side alongside right tackle Lane Johnson. The other four times, they had Johnson move over to the left side. They used an unbalanced line on Riley Cooper's 44-yard catch and run, but not on Nick Foles' 36-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. The benefit of an unbalanced line? "First of all," center Jason Kelce said, "the defense has to adjust. It's used to lining up in a certain situation over and over again. It's used to seeing a center, two guards and two tackles. All of a sudden you move a guy to the other side of the ball and it completely changes the dynamic of what they're trying to defend. They have to line up in different situations and it puts them in uncomfortable situations and positions." Expect to keep seeing it.--With a third Bucs player -- rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks -- diagnosed with MRSA late last week, many Eagles players were more nervous about the possibility of catching an infectious disease at Raymond James Stadium than they were about winning the game. "It was scary stuff," linebacker Mychal Kendricks said. "When you go in there \[to the locker room\] and are changing, you don't want to touch anything. You don't want to touch anything that hits the floor. When you're changing and something hits the floor, you're like, man, this could be contaminated." Kendricks still was concerned Wednesday after discovering a slight cut on his right elbow. "Is there pus coming out of that?" he asked a reporter. "Ah, man. Do you think I have MRSA?"--Phil Savage is the executive director of the Senior Bowl. In 2010 and '11, the former Browns general manager served as a player personnel consultant for the Eagles. Earlier this week, he sent out this interesting tweet regarding Cowboys return ace Dwayne Harris: "During time @Eagles, if there was one prospect I really 'pushed' to decision-makers, it was WR/KR Dwayne Harris. He's a 'FOOTBALL' player." The Cowboys took Harris, an East Carolina product who leads the league in punt and kickoff returns, in the sixth round of the '11 draft, with the 176th overall pick. The Eagles selected Pitt running back Dion Lewis and Iowa offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde in the fifth round and Cincinnati center Jason Kelce in the sixth, 15 picks after Harris. Kelce has turned out to be a great pick. Vandervelde is Kelce's backup. Lewis had just 36 carries in two seasons with the Eagles before being traded to the Browns in April. According to a club source, the Eagles had Harris rated higher than the Cowboys, but "we didn't really go off our \[draft\] board."--Donovan McNabb rushed for 3,459 yards in his career, which is the sixth most by a quarterback in history. Yet he always detested talking about his ability as a runner. Felt it somehow disparaged his ability as a passer. "It just bothers me when they try to label guys by their abilities," McNabb told me this summer. "Yes, I was blessed with the ability to run. But a lot of people are. It wasn't like I ran a 4.2 or 4.3 \[40\]. I knew how to utilize my legs when I needed to. But when you label somebody as a running quarterback, it takes away from what they do. We're all quarterbacks." The Redskins' Robert Griffin III has no such reservations about his running ability. When asked about running nine times for 77 yards in the 31-16 loss to the Cowboys, he said, "I felt that's what I have to do. That's what I've always had to do. You've got to use every ability that you have. I'm just focusing on being the playmaker that I know I can be and not letting anybody else tell me how to play this game."--How much value does a victory over a winless team have? According to online oddsmaker Bovada, apparently a lot. With last week's win over the Bucs, the Eagles' odds of winning the Super Bowl improved from 66/1 to 50/1. The Cowboys are at 25/1.DOMO'S RANKINGSRk. Team (W-L) Pvs.1. Broncos (6-0) 12. Chiefs (6-0) 23. *Seahawks (5-1) 54. 49ers (4-2) 65. Patriots (5-1) 76. Saints (5-1) 37. Packers (3-2) 88. (泰 景/文圖 黃振壯/譯)mini storage
