Former hoops heroes still sharing their wisdom
Source: Philadelphia Daily NewsJuly 21--WITH THE HEAT index shooting over 100 degrees yesterday, Ollie Johnson was dripping in sweat inside, at the Police Athletic League Recreation Center on Tioga Street in North Philadelphia. The Temple alum (1969-72) was working hard teaching kids from around the area how to pass, dribble and shoot at the "Full Court: Prep for Success" camp. He even took to the floor to put up some shots. The sweltering heat did not make Johnson, 64, think twice about helping out the kids that attended the camp."I'm out here because I've always been out here," Johnson said. "I've always done it. It has been ingrained in me to do it. It's about doing your part. Doing what is right for the kids, and the next generation. I needed it. I was a good kid, and I needed it."Johnson, along with fellow Philadelphia basketball figures Pat McFarland and Paul Graham, instructed the kids about basketball fundamentals, but also taught them life skills they can use every day."That's really all that is important," McFarland said. "When we teach how to shoot, we are teaching them how to learn. That's what these camps are all about. To come to just a basketball camp is not going to be worth anything."McFarland, 61, who played at Saint Joseph's from 1970-73, thinks camps such as this one go well beyond just putting the ball in the hoop and learning proper defensive position. He was inducted to the Hawks Hall of Fame in 2005, but still continues to help kids learn and grow."A majority of the kids will never get to the next levels," McFarland added. "But if they can learn how to shoot, and learn how to dribble, and learn how to pass, then they can learn how to do a lot of things. Learning how to learn is the most important thing we do here."Johnson, on the other hand, thinks it is the ex文件倉eriences he can share with the kids is what will help them. He played in the NBA for 10 years for six teams, including the hometown Sixers."I think what is important is that we show up," Johnson said. "That they have an opportunity to talk to us and understand that we were once PAL kids or YMCA kids just like them, from the same environment, and what we did is possible for them."Johnson and McFarland, both Big 5 Hall of Famers, have seen a lot of changes in the Big 5 since they played in it."It changed a lot," McFarland said. "I went through the Big 5. I had a chance to play in the heyday of the Big 5. There was nothing like it. I think when the Big 5 broke up, the conferences started getting so big. It was money. They wanted to play more games at their own arenas, which made sense. It changed things. I think it impacted Philadelphia basketball, because it was the Public League, Catholic League, Inter-Ac league that all fed the Big 5. As the business of basketball itself got bigger, you saw a lot of colleges coming in and recruiting, and taking kids out of the city. There's nothing wrong with that, but it just changed the whole basketball world."Added Johnson: "It's different. Everything has changed. AAU basketball has changed basketball. I think that charter schools have changed the spirit of it. I think it was more fun when I played in the Big 5. A lot of guys have been talking about it."Whether the Big 5 has changed for the better or worse, both Johnson and McFarland pushed through the oppressive heat to help ensure that the kids who showed up to the camp had the same opportunity to succeed as they did.On Twitter: @AndrewJAlbert01Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Philadelphia Daily News Visit the Philadelphia Daily News at www.philly.com Distributed by MCT Information Services存倉

EDITORIAL: Fair play
Source: Tulsa World, Okla.mini storageJuly 19--When conservative economists such as Art Laffer and Donna Arduin tell you something is good for business, it's a pretty good bet that it is.The Marketplace Fairness Act would allow states to force large Internet retailers to collect sales taxes and return them to the states from which goods were purchased. The Laffer-Arduin report said that enforcing the act would create 21,348 jobs in Oklahoma and as many as 1.5 million nationwide in the next 10 years.State, municipal and county governments in Oklahoma lose about $225 million in revenue annually from uncollected taxes -- state, $121.5 million, municipal, $85.5 million and county, $18 million. The conservative credentials of Laffer -- of the Laffer Curve -- are impeccable. Laffer was instrumental in forming President Ronald Reagan's economic policies. Arduin's are equally impressive. The Marketplace Fairness Act gives small businesses a fighting chance against out-of-state Internet companies that can sell items cheaper because they don't have to chaself storagege a sales tax. Customers are supposed to keep track of their purchases and pay the sales taxes. Few, however, do.One argument against the act is that customers have to pay a shipping fee that sometimes equals the sales tax. True. But that ought not relieve anyone of the responsibility of the tax owed. Having something shipped to your front door is a choice.Opponents also fear that the act would merely drive big Internet companies out of the country where the sales would be difficult to collect. Maybe, but the software states are supposed to provide the companies might solve that. Our Oklahoma small businesses -- the heart and soul of our economy -- deserve the same fair chance to thrive as do out-of-state companies. Our state, city and country governments -- which heavily rely on sales taxes -- deserve the money owed to them. This is not a tax hike. It is payment owed but ignored.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.) Visit Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.) at www.tulsaworld.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

Legislators questioning campus-discipline process
Source: The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.新蒲崗迷你倉C.July 19--DURHAM -- Competing "regulatory reform" bills proposed by the state House and Senate suggest legislators want to change or at least scrutinize the way the UNC system is handling student disciplinary hearings. One of the bills, passed by the Senate on Friday, would authorize a legislative study of the issue, to look among other things at a student's right to counsel in the hearing process. The other, passed by the House on July 11, would intervene directly and spell out those rights. It would allow a student to be represented during a hearing by a licensed attorney or "non-attorney advocate," except if a case involves academic dishonesty or a school has "implemented a 'student honor court' which is fully staffed by students."The issue is on the General Assembly's plate thanks to Rep. John Bell, a Wayne County Republican, who says legislators need to deal with the "kangaroo court situation we have" on a number of campuses.Bell said he got interested after learning of a case involving a couple of fraternities at UNC Wilmington that seemed to him to have been handled in an arbitrary way.The House freshman responded in April by filing a bill that said a student could seek representation from an attorney "during any formal stage of any disciplinary procedure" he or she may become embroiled in.The measure was later softened, at the UNC system's request, to include the exceptions for academic dishonesty cases and student-staffed honor courts. Bell said he agreed to the changes in hopes system leaders would support the bill."And of course, they would not," he said.UNC system spokeswoman Joni Worthington confirmed system leaders aren't supporting the measure."Throughout the session, we've reiterated with legislators our belief that [existing] processes work and shouldn't be changed," she said. "Disciplinary hearings are not judicial proceedings."As modified, Bell's bill cleared the House on May 15 by a vote of 112-1, after receiving exactly 2 minutes of floor debate during roughly an 8 1/2 hour session of the House. The measure later stalled in the Senate, so to make sure it received consideration, Bell had it added to another, leadership-supported regulatory reform bill that deals mostly with environmental and land-use matters.Sponsors of the larger bill termed it a "consensus" proposal supported in both chambers, but events proved otherwise. The Senate's vote Thursday was on a competing package that omitted or changed several things the House wants. The student-discipline process has been in the headlines lately because of complaints that UNC Chapel Hill has mishandled cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct. The school is now facing a trio of U.S. Department of Justice investigations stemming from tmini storagee controversy. On a parallel track, the N.C. Supreme Court is mulling a case that asks it to force private universities to honor any written procedural safeguards promised to students, just as UNC and other public schools have to.Bell's proposal only addresses the UNC system, not private universities. Two lawyers involved in the recent disputes, Bob Ekstrand and John Gresham, say there's reason for legislators to take an interest."What's at stake in these university hearings and disciplinary proceedings is enormous for the students involved," Ekstrand said, who's pushed the issue in a series of lawsuits involving Duke University. "The reputational harm to being suspended or disciplined is pretty significant."But Ekstrand voiced qualms about the UNC-requested qualifiers regarding student-staffed courts and academic dishonesty cases, as "those are exceptions that completely swallow the rule" Bell initially proposed. He added they could "run into constitutional problems pretty fast" if judges think they foreclose a student's right to have counsel present when a campus case has potential fallout in off-campus criminal or civil courts.Gresham, who's represented a student accused at UNC Chapel Hill of sexual misconduct, said procedural rules in the UNC system are fractured. Some rely heavily on student courts, while others lean more heavily on hearing panels that mix students, faculty and staff."You've got 16 campuses now, and my guess is you've got 16 different procedures," Gresham said.Mixed-membership panels more commonly are the choice when a case involves allegations of sexual misconduct, as now is the case at UNC Chapel Hill, or where a student is at risk of suspension or expulsion, as at N.C. Central University.Gresham took it as a given the House bill would mean a student could be represented by a lawyer in hearings conducted by mixed-membership panels."In its present configuration, it would be a good piece of legislation because it is very important in these sexual-misconduct cases that there be a very careful review of the allegations," he said.UNC system policy requires campuses to spell out in their disciplinary rules whether an attorney can attend or represent a student during a hearing. But representation or assistance of a student by a lawyer in most instances "is neither required nor encouraged," the policy says. The only exception to that is for cases where a student also faces off-campus criminal charges. There, campuses must allow an attorney to attend a hearing, and allow students to consult an attorney. But the attorney may not question witnesses or address the hearing panel.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.)
