There's no particular story; viewers can make up their own, he says.Richmond RetailingA temporary traveling market will touch down in Richmond this weekend, offering shoppers a chance to check out goods from more than 20 American designers and several local vendors.The market, emphasizing American-made mens-wear, shoes, accessories and lifestyle goods, will feature apparel from Billy Reid, named Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.Among the other brands available will be Pierrepont Hicks, Osmium, The Hill-Side, Appa-latch and Cause & Effect.The traveling market called a pop-up in the retail industry-will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the former power plant at 1201 Haxall Point near the Riverside on the James development along the Canal Walk in downtown Richmond.The market idea originated from Northern Grade, a Minnesota-based retail operation. The company is on a nationwide tour, with stops including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington. After the Richmond event, Chicago is next on the schedule.Coordinating the Richmond stop is Need Supply Co., which sells men's and women's apparel and other items both online and from its base at 3100 W. Cary St. in Cary-town.Need Supply spokeswoman Molly Szkotak said several local companies will be represented. For example, Shockoe Denim will be on hand selling its high-end jeans, as will high-end shirt retailer Ledbury selling only American-made迷你倉accessories. The building was a Virginia Electric and Power Co. hydroelectric generating plant before it was shut down in stages from 1955 through 1965.In 2000, The Cordish Cos., a Balti-more-based developer, bought the 20,000-square-foot building and the nine-tenths-of-an-acre lot.Cordish said earlier this year that it was putting the building on the market for $3.5 million, but now it is trying to lease the space.Jeffrey Cooke, a senior vice president with Cushman & Wakefield -- Thalhimer and the listing broker, said he is optimistic that the company will lease the space because of the location.The Haxall plant's interior has a 28-foot ceiling. For the pop-up market, Need Supply has commissioned a mural that local artist Duncan Robertson has been painting inside the building."It's a scene that lets the viewer provide the story," Robertson said. 我們習慣的導演是裹大衣的，迷你倉套馬甲的，眼神中掩藏不住的是霸氣，放蕩不羈與書生氣相遠，說起話來中氣十足，喉嚨也響，那是導演掌控慣了話語權帶來的職業病，和媒體之間常有口水之爭，一不高興言語間會帶些粗話……別說是大導演，即便是文化宮的業餘導演，在一干人馬中，一看就看出來。導演的範兒啊，沒辦法。那麼李安呢？所有這樣一切導演的範兒，李安一應俱缺。這個男人在謙和的笑容中略帶靦腆，在低聲的話語中略帶文弱；至少在我們看得到的場景里，李安一直是穿了西裝的李安，一直是每一次獲獎總會在台上九十度鞠躬的李安，一直是在重大場合一定要感謝自己妻子的李安。假設我們至今還沒見到過李安的照片，我們或許無法在街上認出李安。李安會有回頭率，因為儒雅，卻沒有人認出他就是導演李安。為什麼沒有認出李安？因為李安全身上下，就沒有一點點導演的標識，所以也就沒有導演的範兒。李安不具有導演的範兒，但是李安就是李安的範兒。儒雅不僅僅是李安的表情，更是他的文化內涵，還可以說，謙和不僅僅是李安的做派，更是他為人為藝術的態度。骨子裡的李安，是一個血液里流淌著文化的人。現在的李安，不論是什麼做派都是對的，就像二十多年前的張藝謀，裹了一身軍大衣，蹲在地上嚼著大蔥薄餅，不也是一時之氣派？要說出道，張藝謀早于李安，要說運道，張藝謀也好于李安。1988年《紅高粱》獲得柏林國際電影節最佳故事片金熊獎的時候，李安還在為入行苦苦掙扎，靠了妻子的供養才堅持著藝術之路，他的導演處女作《推手》問世是4年後的事情了。1992年和1993年，張藝謀憑借著《菊豆》和《大紅燈籠高高掛》，攬下了威尼斯國際電影節銀獅獎和金獅獎；1994年，張藝謀的電影生涯達到了巔峰，《活著》獲得了戛納國際電影節評委會大獎、最佳男演員獎（葛優）、美國電影電視金球獎最佳外語片提名；英國電影學院獎……張藝謀就缺一個奧斯卡了，每年奧斯卡名單公佈，國人都在為他惋惜甚至鳴不平。那時候的李安，剛剛厚積薄發。1995年，他的《理智與情感》，獲得了奧斯卡的七項提名，之後的李安，那就是一個沒有導演範兒的國自存倉範兒了，每一部電影都留在了人們的記憶里，並且越來越強化，直至完全取代了人們心目中張藝謀的位置。《喜宴》《飲食男女》《臥虎藏龍》《綠巨人》《斷背山》《色戒》，直至去年的《少年派的奇幻漂流》。與這些電影交相輝映的，是兩屆奧斯卡最佳導演，兩屆柏林金熊，兩屆威尼斯金獅，兩屆英國電影學院獎最佳導演，兩屆金馬最佳導演，兩屆金像最佳導演……李安狂飆突進的時候，張藝謀還在拍電影，不過《活著》之後，作為導演的張藝謀，差不多死了大半，更加出名的倒是鞏張戀分手和“謀女郎”之類。分水嶺漸漸形成，出道稍晚的李安已經領先大陸導演，在他拍了 《臥虎藏龍》之後，張藝謀做了《英雄》，陳凱歌更是用一隻饅頭引發了血案。是李安和張藝謀們攜手共築了分水嶺。人們知道的李安，是一個拍電影的李安，除了拍電影之外，人們不知道李安還在做什麼，還會做什麼。這有兩層意思，一層意思是李安對電影事業的熱愛和專注，另一層意思像是有點不恭敬，那就是，除了拍電影，李安再也沒有其他擅長。我以為，兩層意思都能通達李安。和李安相隔著海峽的張藝謀恰恰是與李安的兩個特點相反，一方面張藝謀擅長電影之外，一方面張藝謀也是心在電影之外。這才是李安電影在華語片一騎絕塵的本因。在李安全力拍片的時候，張藝謀已經分身有術，雖然也在拍電影，但是更多是做氣勢磅�的電影之外的導演：當然也包括奧運會開幕式總導演，還有更多呢——導演歌劇 《圖蘭朵》， 2004年在陽朔導演 《印象·劉三姐》，接著是 《印象·麗江》， 《印象·西湖》， 《印象大紅袍》……在祖國山山水水留下了很多 “印象”的時候，張藝謀電影，不要說得獎，那一部“三槍”什麼的，和那一部“黃金甲”什麼的，留下的是一串段子般的嘲笑；號稱最美的愛情片《山楂樹之戀》想是要挽救“三槍”的惡俗口碑，卻讓我終於得出這樣的結論：此生不再看藝謀；至於 《金陵十三釵》，那只能是張藝謀氣數已盡。 “西北望長安，可憐無數山”，西北恰是張藝謀的祖籍，可謂是，藝謀望李安，可恨斷背山。李安不需要範兒，是因為他就沒範兒。張藝謀不需要獎，因為他……迷你倉

夢想煙霧彈前實踐大學設計學院院長安郁茜如是說：「林純升是台灣少有不受市場影響、忠實生活經驗與自我的設計師。他探討人跟衣服、布料與布料的空間關係。只有不跟隨潮流，迷你倉最平才能引領潮流。」聽到安郁茜這麼說，林純升頓時紅了臉，他有一套「半瓶醋」理論，「只有半瓶醋沒有關係，因為你還有很多空間把醋加滿，最怕明明只有半瓶醋，卻還讓人敲得震天響，等人家探頭一瞧，就會發現你不怎樣」。這跟他是家中次子有很大關係，看過長子承受的壓力，林純升覺得當「老二」很好，「讓我一直抱持著學習的心態」。林純升小時候，家裡是小型的成衣代工廠，10多歲的他就喜歡縫衣服，從無形概念到有形服裝的過程令他著迷不已。小學時寫「我的志願」，他明知自己想當設計師，作文裡卻隻字不敢提，就連填大學志願，前面還要填一堆「煙霧彈」，不讓父母知道自己一心想念設計。拒隨波逐流1996年，還在念書的林純升，已是台灣參加國際設計比賽的代表隊成員，畢業後他進入夏姿設計女裝，還與康嘉偉等人一同創立自己的品牌「7/10」。看似一切順利，林純升卻意識到，「如果我只作服裝，我的眼界會局限在衣服上，我只會關心下一季的流行趨勢」。於是他毅然離開台灣，跑去西班牙投靠同樣作設計的姊姊。2002年，林純升進入西班牙巴塞隆納LLOTJA藝術學院學習絹印設計，隔年又去MASSANA設計學院念藝術珠寶，過去在他眼中很俗氣的黃金，也能如雕塑般散發美感，這改變了林純升的價值觀。以前覺得跟舞蹈沒共鳴，嘗試看過一次，竟有意想不到的收穫。他也發現，西班牙的時尚設計教育偏向技職訓練，在ZARA、MANGO這些快速時尚的影響下，學生對於沿用各大精品的設計概念習以為常。「追逐潮流是件很簡單的事情，有陣子大家都瘋建築元素、巴洛克風、幾合拼貼，如果你只作賣得出去的設計，就永遠作不出自己的東西，就像船不能沒有馬達，否則只能隨波逐流」。征戰馬德里儘管如此，西班牙政府近年在推動服裝設計精品化所投注的資源仍是令人佩服。西班牙各地有許多小型的設計活動，出產紙的小鎮舉辦「紙衣服創作」；如同創意市集的「Ciuda real為你設計嘉年華」，消費者可以到每個設計師的攤位上，請他量身訂作。林純升就在主辦單位的鼓勵下，決定挑戰馬德里時裝周。「當初我排斥作設計的原因之一，就是業界存在很多潛規則，馬德里時裝周也一樣，我既沒錢也沒背景，那時卻有評審跑來挺我」。他在3、400名競爭者中脫穎而出，獲得西班牙政府的全額贊助，甚至連國際媒體的邀約，都由政府一手包辦。異鄉奮鬥14載，他曾被西班牙人嘲笑是迷你倉小中國」，也看見西班牙人真誠率直的一面。如今林純升對成功與否看得很淡，知道自己要什麼，追求而不沉迷。「其實只要把人作好，事情自然會順利。當你很想講一件事情時，自然有人會聽見」。衣服藏隱喻「哲學」是林純升作品中最重要的特質，他形容自己的衣服是「有機物」，能夠跟人們對話。看林純升的設計，眼光不是檢驗，是發掘，會樂於尋找林純升想說的話。他笑言自己是「一人工廠」，每件衣服只作一件，而且親手縫製，他認為這是「對消費者的誠意」。他從葉片的光影變化，設計出層層葉片交疊的灰色洋裝，他引入柏拉圖的思想，「你看見的是葉片？還是光影的變化？或是你看見最深層的本質」。他在宗教畫家朱巴然聖者受難的畫中，震撼於聖者無懼痛楚的祥和表情，他抽取畫中色彩運用在設計上。他思考存在、不存在，從醫學圖片裡畸形的四隻腳，演變出褲、裙作成一件衣服、一件衣服裡有兩件裙子。他探究共生，把鱷魚皮放在皮草領上、把上衣當作變色龍，棲息在充滿礦石稜角的裙子上。讓設計說話林純升最常掛在嘴邊的一句話就是：「我是一個很怪的設計師。」儘管人人讚賞他的設計，他卻討厭讚美，希望大家都能告訴他缺點。「我的設計不會到達完美，但我會不斷追求接近完美，如果做到我生命中最後一天都未能企及，我只求心安」。下一季他要設計「缺點」，「我要告訴大家，我也是人，會犯錯、不完美，當你到達完美，你就要擔心失去完美」。即使林純升自認不完美，但他絕對是個認真的設計師。為了研究葉片形狀變化，他上網蒐購各種植物，觀察從發芽到枯死的生命歷程。小時候他蹲在縫紉機旁看媽媽工作，長大了蹲在樹下看螞蟻走動、在海邊看浪花捲起的線條變化，一看就是數小時。他認為，設計師不能只看時尚雜誌，設計其實就是表達生活態度的方式。他引用了設計師Paul Smith的話：「任何東西都會是靈感，看不見就再看一次。」●小檔案林純升新銳設計師1974年出生於台灣，1997年實踐大學服裝設計系畢業。2011年以「向朱巴然致敬」系列，獲選為馬德里時裝周EGO前衛新銳設計師，2012年二度獲選，並三度參加馬德里時裝周。個人品牌Shen Lin。現正於誠品松菸eslite concept展出Dialogue within Dialogue設計展，至10月1日。●快速對焦三度登上馬德里時裝周從1999到2013年，林純升在西班牙花費14年，找出屬於自己的時尚設計之路。他是台灣第一位三度登上馬德里時裝周的設計師，卻不喜歡人家叫他台灣之光。他形容自己是「不愛響叮噹的半瓶醋，永遠都在追求更好的設計」。儲存

近年愈來愈多人愛上葡萄酒，儲存閒時購買一兩支紅白酒回家，細嘗杯中物，若然對葡萄酒有更多認識，品酒便更有樂趣。明報將成立Wine Club，邀來多位城中葡萄酒專家助陣，並將定期舉辦試酒聚會，透過專家主持品酒活動及城中大小葡萄酒新聞的報道，加深讀者對葡萄酒的認識。 文：張艾渟圖：黃志東、受訪者提供、helenecanada@istockphoto場地提供：君悅酒店Grissini 明報 Wine Club即將成立，並將定期舉行品酒活動，由葡萄酒專家小組成員主持。參加者可在專家引導下，品嘗不同主題或產區葡萄酒，讓味蕾游走於不同葡萄香氣之間。明報邀來6位葡萄酒專家助陣，包括著名酒評人劉致新、劉偉民、鍾鑑明、鄺英志、蔡榛原與陸潔珊，為明報讀者深入淺出分享葡萄酒的專業知識。有關Wine Club詳情，敬請留意本欄報道。 劉致新 有「劉校長」之稱，早於98 年創辦《酒經月刊》，為同類型刊物的先鋒。出版多本葡萄酒相關書籍， 包括《歎盡澳洲酒莊之旅》、《天作之合——當葡萄酒遇上中菜》等，於多份報章雜誌撰專欄文章。 劉偉民（Ronny） 酒評人兼樂評人，曾推出多本葡萄酒著作，包括《說葡萄酒的語言——法國篇》、《世界之醉》、《酒為上著》，並推出葡萄酒配音樂的CD Music & Wine－The Perfect Matching。現為大中華酒評人協會主席，去年更正式成為釀酒師，推出在意大利釀製的葡萄酒。 陸潔珊（Jennifer Luk） 筆名酒妮花，擁有英國WSET 高級證書、美國葡萄酒教育家協會專業認證烈酒人員認證及美國侍酒師大師協會初級品酒師證書等專業資格，從事葡萄酒活動市場活動籌劃、教育等工作，於港大專業進修學院、HKMA、中大專業進修學院等教授葡萄酒課程。 鄺英志 著名品酒師，法國波爾多葡萄酒學院認可講師，香港葡萄酒評審協會創辦人兼主席。教授葡萄酒課程，並曾出任多個葡萄酒比賽評委，如Everyday Bordeaux。 蔡榛原（Jordan） 前媒體飲食版資深記者。獲法國波爾多葡萄酒學院認證導師（L'Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux）資歷，現為大中華酒評人協會副主席、香港葡萄酒學會會長，曾任多項葡萄酒會評判，現時於香港管理專業協會（HKMA）、僱員再培訓局等機構教授葡萄酒課程。 鍾鑑明（Thomas Chung）熟悉中國葡萄酒市場。早年創立香港專業品酒師協會、侍酒師協會。現於嶺南大學舊生會、HKMA 教授葡萄酒課程，並於《酒經月刊》、《直通車》等刊物撰文。 各人期望 了解口味添樂趣 有「劉校長」之稱的劉致新從事葡萄酒行業多年，有感現時市場愈來愈多元，飲葡萄酒愈來愈「好玩」，「現時市場選擇五花八門，對新手來說可能有點混亂，但是對葡萄酒認識愈多，會愈來愈享受」。他希望Wine Club能增加讀者對葡萄酒的興趣，從中找到樂趣。 品酒師鄺英志同樣認為要先了解口味，才有樂趣，「很多人喜歡葡萄酒，卻未必清楚自己的口味，多參與不同試酒會，嘗試不同風格地域的葡萄酒，你會逐漸發現自己喜歡什麼類型」。他指單是法國已有很多風格迥異的產區，加上新興的產國如南非、泰國、格魯吉亞，甚至印度，葡萄酒領域愈來愈廣泛，選擇愈來愈多。 中立角色助推廣 Ronny 與Jordan 同是愛酒之人，二人均曾從事傳媒，他們期望透過傳媒平台辦葡萄酒活動，以推動葡萄酒文化。「試酒會可能只有幾十人參加，以傳媒平台發放相關資訊，卻可一次過讓更多人獲得葡萄酒資訊」。 Ronny 續指，坊間試酒會較商業化，旨在推銷葡萄酒，如明報能以中立角色辦活動，相信更有助推廣葡萄酒文化。 Jordan 也認為坊間葡萄酒活動質素頗參差， 「坊間有很多不同主題的品酒會、葡萄酒課程，無奈質素有點參差，講者、教師未必有豐富資歷。如果由具公信力的機構主辦，效果定會更好」。 凝聚愛酒之人 Thomas 早年移居澳洲，曾參與當地流行的葡萄酒會， 「形式是多人一起夾錢買酒，品嘗新興的酒，或趁機品嘗平日難以單獨負擔的貴酒，故有些聚會非常均真，會以量杯來倒酒呢」。他認為酒會氣氛良好，參加者可以交流一下。 Jennifer 則認為Wine Club 有趣在可凝聚不同背景的愛酒之人， 「即使大家背景不同，拿起酒杯，大家都變成愛酒的同路人。而且多人聚在一起，可有更多機迷你倉品嘗不同的葡萄酒，從而發掘自己真正喜歡的口味。所以期望明報Wine Club 試酒會可以凝聚更多愛酒之人」。 生活藝術的修煉 明報總編輯劉進圖 品酒，對某些人來說，是一種時尚的消費，對另一些人來說，是調節緊張都市生活的鎮靜劑，對我來說，是一種生活藝術的修煉，值得看重的是品酒的態度，而不是葡萄酒的價錢。 多年前一位長居澳洲的朋友告訴我，可陳年的紅酒開瓶後，除了要給它透透氣，讓紅酒氧化，釋出酒香，還要把瓶底的酒渣去掉，否則喝的時候會有苦澀味。如果家�沒有醒酒器，可以拿一個舊酒瓶，洗淨後倒放晾乾，慢慢把新開瓶的紅酒倒進舊瓶�，剩下最後的十分一不喝，怕浪費的可以儲起來，烹調紅酒燴牛尾之類的菜式。我按這個方法做，發覺慢慢倒酒的過程很有意思，心緒變得淡泊寧靜，全神貫注於手上的點滴涓流，有點禪修的�味。 品酒可複雜可簡單 品酒其實和品茶有很多相似之處。品茶之前，要做許多細緻的準備工夫，從罐子�倒出適量的茶葉，洗滌茶具，準備開水，烹茶時要全神貫注，一絲不苟，才能弄出色香味俱佳的好茶。品酒也是這樣，要小心地用環形?刀把封瓶的金屬封條切除，用開瓶器把瓶塞起出，把酒慢慢倒進適當的容器，耐心等候它「蘇醒」釋出酒香，倒酒進寬口酒杯，緩緩搖晃以觀察酒體和酒色，從「酒腳」往下流動的速度和形態看酒體是否凝實，從酒香中辨別葡萄的品種、泥土的氣息和橡木的芬芳，最後才一口一口的喝，讓每一口酒在嘴唇的上下左右流動，考驗味蕾不同部位的反應，嚥下後再回味那未盡的餘韻，看能否勾起往昔的美好記憶。 品酒，可以很複雜，單是法國酒莊的名字，已多得無法記憶，何�還有加州、澳洲、智利、南非等一系列新世界的酒，教人眼花撩亂。品酒，可以很簡單，不外乎色、香、味、體、韻，五個字而已，酒色是否晶瑩，酒香是否迷人，酒味是否醇厚，酒體是否凝實，酒後有否餘韻，初學者也可以親身品嘗，憑主觀印象逐項評價，說喜歡或不喜歡，這個入門門檻並不高，但往後的知識積累和經驗印證，卻有無窮的學問和趣味。 《明報》開辦酒版，是想推廣品酒文化，讓更多讀者跨過門檻，進入品酒人的世界，也希望與跨過了門檻的朋友交流知識和經驗，共同尋獲更多的學問和趣味。 酒文化Q&A 如何處理喝剩的葡萄酒? Q：喝葡萄酒，有人喜歡上酒吧，找相熟的侍酒師介紹對口味的酒；有人喜歡把葡萄酒買回家，慢慢細嘗當中的果香芳香礦物香，在最熟悉的環境下享受美酒。不過，無論你飲的是入門級還是頂級葡萄酒，都要面對以下問題：如何處理喝不掉的葡萄酒？ A：葡萄酒最大的敵人是氧氣，瓶內剩餘的酒一旦接觸空氣就會氧化（oxidize）。氧化的葡萄酒會流失果味，酸度變得明顯，餘韻減少，酒體變得單調。故處理喝不掉的葡萄酒，最重要是減緩氧化過程。 常見方法為「打氣」（ 注入氬氣（argon） 、氮氣（nitrogen）此類惰性氣體）、真空酒泵、薄膠膜。真空酒泵最為一般用家使用，原理簡單直接，就是抽走瓶內空氣。酒泵連膠酒塞約百多元，經濟且容易處理，把酒塞套上瓶口，再套入酒泵，快速抽打，抽打愈快阻力愈大，效果便愈好。而薄膠膜新興且簡單，把一層薄薄的膠膜滑進瓶內，浮在酒面（左圖），以把酒面與空氣隔開。這方法雖未被廣泛認同，但勝在容易，且價錢便宜，每塊約$20。而且，再次倒酒時，毋須如真空酒泵般得先移除，使用起來較方便。 「打氣」隔氧效果佳 至於「打氣」，指注入氬氣、氮氣，此類惰性氣體無色無味，密度較氧氣高，以針筒狀工具把氣體注入瓶內，氣體沉降至酒面，把葡萄酒與氧氣隔絕。原理就像把毛氈鋪上酒面。氣體又以氬氣密度較高，效果比氮氣好，價錢也貴上3、4 倍。由於價錢昂貴，一套工具連氣體約$2000，故多用於保存名貴佳釀，或為酒店或高級餐廳採用。無論使用以上任何一種方法，最重要是把酒瓶放入雪櫃，以減慢其氧化速度。 另有一個懶惰的做法，就是隨得紅酒氧化，待它變成醋，就可作紅酒醋汁拌沙律。至於香檳或氣酒，別無他選，只能高高興興的把酒喝完。 文：張艾渟圖：黃志東解答專家：William Chan 真空酒泵酒泵連膠酒塞約百多元，經濟且易處理，最為一般用家使用。圖為使用真空酒泵抽走瓶內空氣。 William Chan 朗豪酒店明閣Wine Guy （ 侍酒師） ， 曾於英國著名酒商BerryBrothers & Rudd、半島酒店、Hotel ICON 工作 mini storage

Couched in legalese, the message to violators boils down to this: Your campaign cash is off-limits until the debt -- plus interest -- is settled, or a judge decides otherwise.The action was discussed last Thursday at a meeting of the Board of Elections commissioners at which outgoing Enforcement Unit counsel Liz Hogan advised Douglas Kellner, the board's Democratic co-chair, that the letters were almost ready to be mailed.The board provided the Times Union with generic copies of both letters and accompanying "information subpoenas," which in the case of each debtor includes four pages of questions about assets and other financial matters that must be filled out and returned. Disobeying the restraining notice can expose the recipient to a contempt-of-court charge, the letter warns.Board spokesman John Conklin said roughly 30 percent of court-ordered judgments are paid without additional action.To deal with the remainder, he said in an email, "There has been a long-standing discussion about whether we have the resources or statutory authority to take additional efforts to collect those unpaid judgments. Roberts fired them for supporting an opponent in his 2009 re-election bid, which he won. The workers sued, saying their First Amendment rights were violated.Roberts said some of the workers were let go because he wanted to replace them with sworn deputies while others were fired because of poor performance or his belief that their actions "hindered the harmony and efficiency of the office." One of those workers, Daniel Ray Carter, had "liked" the Facebook page of Roberts' opponent, Jim Adams.U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson in Norfolk had ruled in April 2012 that while public employees are allowed to speak as citizens on matters of public concern, clicking the "like" button does not amount to expressive speech. In other words, it's not the same as actually writing out a message and posting it on the site.Jackson acknowledged that other courts have ruled that Facebook posts are constitutionally protected speech, but he said in those cases there were "actual statements." Source: Greeley Tribune, Colo.self storageSept. 19--This past weekend, Kersey-area rancher Kevin Ochsner found himself on Weld County Road 44 near U.S. 85, approaching a truck that was hauling away a load of livestock that didn't survive the rush of flood waters sweeping through northeast Colorado.Tears immediately filled his eyes.Part of his emotion, he explained, stemmed from having livestock of his own, and understanding the pain of losing an animal.Some of it might have come out of his exhaustion at the time, from moving about 180 head of his own cattle out of standing water near the South Platte River to higher ground -- an endeavor that took about 48 hours between Friday afternoon and Sunday.The other tears, he added, came out of thankfulness, that -- because of the family members, neighbors and strangers who lended him a hand in his rescue effort -- he didn't lose a single animal."I was certainly blessed. I can't thank enough the wonderful, amazing, good-hearted people who pitched in to help ... and my heart goes out to those who weren't as lucky as us," said Ochsner, whose home and two barns took in water, but who still has his family and herd in tact. I'm not sure many people did."Many livestock and horse owners along the rivers in Weld County are finally taking deep breaths from recent animal rescue efforts -- endeavors that reminded many rural Weld County residents, like Ochsner, of the kindness of their neighbors, and even strangers in the area.Ochsner estimates more than 30 different people -- some whose names he doesn't even know -- helped him on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, moving his cattle from two different locations near the river to friends' pastures迷你倉around the area.Ochsner's cattle are now spread out across five locations all together.Tom and Leslie Lange said they experienced the same magnitude of generosity in their efforts to move dozens of horses out of harms way on their ranch, located east of Greeley near the South Platte River.The Langes are the owners of T and L Quarter Horses -- a local business that shows and trains horses for clients around the country.On Friday afternoon, 16 of the 51 horses were at a show in Denver, leaving 35 out at their ranch -- which, within about 2 1/2 hours, went from dry to under about four feet of water in some areas.Leslie said there were about 25 people -- some neighbors, some volunteers with the Weld County Sheriff's Posse, and some people she didn't know very well -- who pitched in on the rescue effort, including the six people it took to save the last horse on Saturday. It had been fighting against the water all of Friday night, and was too tired to stand once it was pulled out of the deeper waters."It was hard. There's just no way to sleep when you have animals you can't get to," said Leslie, who said Wednesday that her home and barn were finally free of standing water, but their show arena on the property still had about two feet of water in it. "Our clients across the country trust us with their animals, and that's something we take seriously ... incredibly seriously."But the response, when we needed help, was just amazing," added Leslie, who also had seven dogs, a house cat, a miniature mule and a miniature Jersey bull that survived the high-water encounter.The Langes and many others applauded the efforts of the Weld County Sheriff's Posse -- a group of about 45 volunteers on horseback, who donate their time to assist the Weld County Sheriff's Department at events around the community, and answered the call when the waters rose.Margie Martinez, a member of the posse, said the group was at work Friday through Monday, doing what they could to help Weld County residents move their animals out of harm's way."We did everything in our power," Martinez said. "At this point, basically all of the owners have identified the animals we rescued. There was also no loss of human life around here, which is amazing."Still it breaks your heart a little ...
