A total of 17 shots separated the second team from the 10th-place team."I hope when they look at the scores here they realize they don't have do anything spectacular or out of the ordinary for them to have a shot," Bath coach Doug Davis said. "They need to do what they've done all year."In the Division III boys state golf tournament on Ohio State's Scarlet Course, Lima Central Catholic shot 361. The T-Birds stand 11th out of 12 teams.James Riepenhoff paced LCC with an 80.The Wildcats didn't have anyone post anything higher than 91, which they didn't count. But they didn't have anyone shoot lower than an 82."I learned the state championship course is very hard," Bath left-hander Eric Jordan said.Bath's No. 3 man Jordan led the way with an 82, shooting 42-40 over the 6,700-yard, par-72 layout."The course was long, so you have to hit your driver well and the greens had really tough pin locations," Jordan said. "You just tried to get on in two and two putt. Pars are a great score today on any hole. You have to be smart, and you have to stay out of trouble."Wildcats No. 5 man sophomore Spencer Stubbs shot an 85, but was 5-over-par for the final two holes."I was hitting the ball great up until No. 17 (a par-3 over water), but then I finished double (bogey), then triple (bogey)," Stubbs said. "That was the only thing that killed me."Stubbs birdied No. 7, the 515-yard par-5."I hit a good drive, then pushed my second shot into the bunker," Stubbs said. "I hit on the green and dropped the putt."Bath's No. 1 man Evan Hall posted an 89, while No. 2 man Brady Garver shot 87. Adam Vieira shot 91."The greens were tricky, and they had a lot of hard pin positions," Hall said. "Bu存倉, overall, I didn't strike the ball well, tee to green. My putting wasn't that bad. The speed of the greens wasn't too bad, but they are quicker than what we are used to."Bath's No. 5 man will tee off at 9 a.m. today on the No. 10 tee. The rest of the Wildcats will follow.Stubbs said it wasn't so much the course that gave him the biggest trouble."Mostly it was nerves for me," Stubbs said. "I hope I can come back and shoot strong tomorrow. I'll have a lot more feel for the green tomorrow. I had two three-putts today."Davis said, "I think Eric and Spencer played well today. Spencer just had a couple of bad holes at the end."Hall said he learned a lot on the first day. Often his iron shots landed on the front of the green and danced through the ice-like green and off the back edge."I'll play it for the front of the green more," Hall said. "And not attacking it so much. And I have to keep my head straight."Four players in the tournament led the way with a 73. Dayton Oakwood had senior Tripp French and freshman Connor Quigley both shoot 73.Mariemont's Will Grimmer and Heath's Derek Hamm also shot a 1-over-par 73.Lima Central CatholicLCC also struggled with the pin placements on the Scarlet Course."There were places you didn't want to be on the greens and that's where we'd be," LCC coach Brock Howe said. "We had a couple of five putts from 70-to-75 feet. You have to be in the right spot to score."Besides Riepenhoff's 80, Aaron Wilker shot 92, while Westin Young had a 94. James Thatcher had 95 and Ian Friesner shot 96.LCC will tee off at 9 a.m. on hole No. 10."I told them to keep their heads up," Howe said. "I told them it's a great experience and to go out and give it your best.
