Source: The Portales News-Tribune, N.倉M.Dec. 24--A new face of the Roosevelt County Sheriff's department, Deputy James Beatty, 28, is not a stranger to Portales.Beatty, born and raised in Roswell, went to New Mexico State University for his education, but found the second largest city in New Mexico too big. Transferring to Eastern New Mexico University, Beatty found Portales to be friendly and inviting.Due to financial difficulties, Beatty joined the U.S. Marines and "basically begged to be put into the infantry."Training at Camp Pendleton in California and then being shipped out on the amphibious assault ship, the U.S.S. Peleliu, Beatty traveled the world.Once he left the Marines, he sent his application to the police academy.Graduating valedictorian and getting the fitness reward in his class, Beatty's hard work paid off.His wife, Dawna Beatty, wanted to go back to college and they wanted their son, Riker, 3, to get a good education, so they decided to come to Portales. What is your favorite thing about living in Portales?I love the people here. While I was at California the people were different. Like here you would wave at people and they will wave back and smile. In California they would just look at you funny for waving at them. Here it is a much better town. What do yomini storage hope to accomplish as deputy?I want to impact the community in a positive way. In everything I do for my job as deputy I want to help out the community and hopefully do it in a positive light. What is your favorite cop movie?Hmm, that is hard, but I think it has to be the "Lethal Weapon" movies. What were some of your favorite places you traveled to while being with the U.S. Marines?Darwin, Australia, was just really awesome, but ridiculously expensive and driving on the other side of the road was weird. Dubai was amazing. It was like a person rubbed a magic lamp and a genie popped out and wished for a city in the middle of the sand. The city just rolls out of the sand. When you go there, there is just sand dunes and then out of no where you start to see the amazing skyscrapers. It is unreal. What were your reasons for joining the police force?Well. I have always wanted to be a cop and that came from the influence of my father, who was in mounted patrol. He would always come home and tell me stories of what he did and it always excited me. I wanted to help people and this was the best place to do it.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Portales News-Tribune (Clovis, N.M.)
