Containers were enroute to Batam and held counterfeits of Furla, Burberry, GucciChina-made bags, shoes, belts and other fashion accessories found in two containers were actually fakes of top brands that could retail for more than $1 million abroad.迷你倉The goods from a Shenzhen port were on their way to Batam when they were intercepted here by Singapore Customs in April while awaiting re-shipment.The case has triggered a slew of trademark breach lawsuits. The big names seeking legal redress include Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Sanrio, according to the High Court pre-trial conference list last week. Some of the fakes bore Burberry and Hermes labels too.Singapore Customs spokesman Tok Choon Min told The Sunday Times yesterday that officers inspected the two 40-foot containers on April 2 and 4 and found 436 cartons of counterfeit fashion items. More than 30,900 fake items were seized. He added that the counterfeits which had been declared as "household goods" were detained by Customs after court injunctions were obtained by the brand owners.Mr Tok, who is acting head of the Customs operations management branch, said the successful operations reflect the cooperation between Customs and the brand owners in the fight against counterfeit goods."We do not condone such illegal trading activities," he said. One of the suits involving Italian label Furla against Megastar Shipping, the forwarding agents of t文件倉e cargo for the Singapore-Batam leg, was resolved about two weeks ago, said Mr Martin Schweiger, Furla's legal representative here.Furla - which makes high quality bags, shoes and other accessories - took custody of more than 5,000 fake handbags from Singapore Customs on Friday."We were very surprised it was such a big amount, as when we started the probe eight months ago, we understood there were 300 bags in about 100 boxes," said Mr Schweiger. Each genuine item could have an average price of about 300 euros (S$520).He said this was the first case involving a transshipment Customs border seizure of a container with counterfeit goods enforced against a local freight forwarder.Furla resolved the case with Megastar in a practical way, he said, because the company is targeting the source and the distributors' destination for the fake goods, and "not honest freight forwarders who are transporting them".Megastar was hired by PT Alvenindo Sukses Express of Indonesia to send the container to Batam.Megastar has denied any liability in court documents filed in relation to the other pending suits, saying it was not aware there were fake goods in the container. PT Alvenindo is also a defendant.Mr Schweiger's firm, Schweiger & Partners (Singapore), which has a sister firm in Munich and deals in brand protection, worked with local law firms Kalco Law and Yuen Law in the Furla case.vijayan@sph.com.sg存倉
