The four-kilometer-long Fengqi Road, connecting with Jianggan District to the east and West Lake to the west, is an important thoroughfare in Hangzhou that has many delights worth exploring.self storageThe present-day road was built on the foundation of the former Tongyuan Road. Tong yuan means “copper coin” in Chinese. It was named due to the royal court of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) establishing the Imperial Zhejiang Mint Bureau on the road. In the early 1990s, Fengqi Road stretched eastward, merging together a couple of old lanes of Hangzhou, including the noted Shiban Lane, which was a center for textile workshops. In ancient times, silk traders around China gathered there to deal in exquisite silk products.Today, Fengqi Road still maintains the tradition of the silk business — Huanbei Silk Market is crowded with buyers and sellers during the day. The bustling scene recalls the silk trading of older times. The famous Du Jinsheng Silk Mill moved to the area in 1956. The machines of Du Jinsheng factory still hum and the textiles they produced are popular with tourists from home and abroad.Fengqi Road also boasts a bird and flower market, where freshly picked flowers come in each day and vendors make bouquets and decorations for weddings and other occasions.Shanghai Daily reporter walked along Fengqi Road last weekend and found a museum, dessert shop and sushi store worth a visit. He Wan LaoFu Tao opened this store in Hangzhou, his hometown, at the beginning of 2009. Today it attracts many customers — one familiar sight is office workers lining up to pick up a bowl of cheese or yogurt during tea break time. The signature dessert offered here is he wan lao — meaning “cheese fits the bowl” — a bowl of soft cheese that remains there even if the bowl is turned upside down.Other desserts include Canton-style double-layer milk custard and Beijing yogurt. Fu has adapted recipes to suit local people’s tastes, so those milk products are not too sweet nor thick.Fu says that his cheese is made with only three ingredients: milk, rice wine and sugar, without any additives. Du was born in a small village near the West Lake in 1898. During his teenage years, the country set up many factories during a wave of modernization, which had an effect on Du.While learning about textiles in college, Du conceived the idea of a “brocade salvation.” He purchased a few machines and employed a couple of workers, erecting the Du Jinsheng Silk Mill in 1922.Enchanted by the picturesque scenery of West Lake, Du took the lake as subject matter for his brocade work. His delicate spinning techniques and chic patterns quickly gained fame around the city. However, the boom didn’t last long. The War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945) broke out, and Hangzhou was occupied by the Japanese. Du would not submit to the invaders and they burned his mill. Du died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1943.Though the founder had passed away, his spinning technique remained. Under his descendants, the factory was rejuvenated after the war and continues to thrive. Today Du Jinsheng brocade typifies the high-quality textiles of Hangzhou. In 1997, the Du Jinsheng Museum opened beside the factory. As the first brocade museum in China, it boasts thousands of collections, including old brocade items and machines, historic pictures and representative works of Du. If customers don’t book in advance, they have to wait at least an hour, so reservation beforehand is recommended. The names of the sushi here are very fascinating, like professor roll, Maruko (a character of a Japanese animation) and golden armor. The One Piece is the most popular sushi with diners. It is named after a Japanese cartoon of the same name, which is a story about a boy called Luffy who explores the ocean in search of the world’s ultimate treasure, known as One Piece, in order to become Pirate King. Sticking to the theme of the cartoon, the sushi is in a boat-like shape and topped with mango, seaweed and whelk meat. Address: 488 Fengqi RdTel: 1599-0033-024 文件倉
