self storage

Dee Hartley said she came across the "I'm Not a Monster" organization about two years ago and asked about Louis becoming an ambassador for the effort. The initiative works to dispel myths surrounding "mean" dog breeds, particularly pit bulls, according to its website. Louis was one of more than 30 dogs across the country to take part in shelter drives on behalf of the "I'm Not a Monster" initiative.Louis has been in the headlines before. In 2007, the pit bull made national news after he was brutally beaten and set on fire by his then-owner in Montgomery. His recovery included 33 surgeries. Juan Daniels pleaded guilty in 2009 to the abuse and was sentenced to 9 1/2 years in prison."Louis is an advocate for pit bulls and showing that they really aren't monsters," Dee Hartley said. "And he's made such a wonderful turnaround."Rea Cord, executiv director for the shelter, said having Louis be an ambassador for pit bulls is great for the breed."He's a dog that underwent such horrible things but is still such a happy animal," she said. "He epitomizes all that's good about the breed."The gifts provided to the shelter included items donated from the area motorcycle groups and donations the Hartleys got from individuals and businesses. After the gifts were given to the shelter, Louis spent the rest of the afternoon playing with children and bonding with the motorcycle riders.Jeanne Uuro, a friend of Dee Hartley's, helped organize the efforts of the River Region motorcycle groups Banditos, Pistoleros and Predators as well as independent riders. The motorcyclists also gave Louis an escort to the event."Anything they can do for the shelter, they will," Uuro said. It's not the first time the Humane Society of Elmore County has heard the roaring engines of the motorcycles, Cord said."All donors are special to us, but this is such a giving group of people," Cord said.

mini storage

Source: Times Union, Albany, N.Y.Dec. 21--COLONIE -- Paul Mahan, the son of Colonie Supervisor Paula Mahan, has been charged with two additional misdemeanors for an incident last month in which he's accused of monitoring a police scanner while illegally hunting deer in a residential area off Sparrowbush Road. The investigation has put Paul Mahan, a former police officer, in a contentious position with the officers handling his case, including one who has been a family friend. In court papers, a state Department of Environmental Conservation officer said Mahan complained his wrist was cut when Colonie officers handcuffed him the night of the Nov. 22 incident. Then last week, Mahan claims, town police mishandled an investigation when he filed a complaint alleging someone threw a rock through the window of his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway. He said they took the rock as evidence after he asked them to leave it and never gave him a receipt."I had three different officers at my house and none of them wanted to follow through with putting down the facts," Mahan said. "They wanted to write down the facts their own way."Mahan, 36, had been on an extended injury leave when he abruptly left the Guilderland police force two years ago, and he now sells real estate. He was originally ticketed last month by the DEC and Colonie police for a misdemeanor charge of illegally using a police radio and traffic violations of failure to signal and having no front license plate. But this week, a state Department of Environmental Conservation officer, who is also an acquaintance of Mahan's, filed additional misdemeanor charges in Town Court. The officer, Kurt M. Bush, filed a deposition stating that on Nov. 23, the day after Mahan was confronted by police, Mahan allegedly sent Bush a text message that read, in part: "Don't stop over. I don't wish to be acquainted with you any further. I have no hatred toward you Kurt but the way you handled things were out of order and I don't (wish) to be associated with you any further. ... Both my parents, my brother, my uncle and cousin are all on the same page and ask the same courtesy."Mahan's father, Joseph, is a former Colonie police officer. He also has other relatives who are current or former pomini storageice officers, or, who are employed by the town of Colonie.Bush's deposition indicates Mahan's text message questioned the strength of the investigation. "How did you make out finding an actual weapon and dead animal Kurt?" states the message attributed to Mahan. "Very unfortunate my neighbor Izzy, who I see everyday, had to be dragged into this witch hunt. Now I don't talk to him either. Not good Kurt."For their part, police said Mahan was pulled over almost immediately after several residents saw him shining a spotlight in woods near their homes before using a crossbow to shoot at a buck deer from his black Nissan sedan."The defendant was also monitoring radio transmissions on a scanner he had on in the vehicle at the time," according to documents filed by the DEC officer. "The radio transmission advised him that Colonie PD was responding to a possible deer jacking complaint in the vicinity. At that point he left Alexander Drive heading west on Sparrowbush Drive. Colonie police pursued the vehicle and Paul Mahan was stopped."Court records indicate police searched Mahan's car and found four crossbow bolts, which are similar to arrows, but no crossbow. The next day, Bush returned to the area and said he found a similar bolt stuck in the turf of a field where Mahan had allegedly shot at the deer. The bolt is being tested for fingerprints and to determine whether hair stuck to it came from a deer.Mahan, in a brief telephone interview Friday, said he wanted to consult his attorney, Stephen Coffey, before commenting on the charges filed against him.His mother, Paula Mahan, confirmed their family knows Bush."He was friends with my son and he lives in the area so they all know each other," Paula Mahan said. "Obviously, I'm a supervisor but I'm a mother as well. Paul is very upset over this occurrence and he did, you know, receive some tickets. ... I can't say anything on his behalf other than obviously he's my son and he's the kind of kid who's always taken responsibility ... and never been in trouble or anything like that."blyons@timesunion.com, 518-454-5547, @blyonswriterCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Times Union (Albany, N.Y.)
